Swim
Comments: Goggles suck! I wore them earlier in the week with no water seepage, but today no matter what I seemed to try, water leeked in. On top of that, they fogged like mad! Of course, I tried something new the night before which I know you are not supposed to, which was to put anti-fog stuff in them. Never again will I do that. Just stick with spitting in them. Overall, swim went quite well except for the water leakage and foggy lenses. My time was definitely faster than I expected, which was more in the 9-10 minute range. What would you do differently?: Get goggles that fit better. Swim more in the pool! Haven't been swimming much lately and need to improve my time. Start my watch! It didn't get started until I hit "lap" at T1. I thought I had started it in the water, but I didn't....no biggy, though. Transition 1
Comments: Overall T1 went pretty well...time is a guesstimate (from my watch) since Koz didn't give us T1 splits. First time really trying to get helmet on while getting wetsuit off and it went pretty good. Had to use hands to get wetsuit off heals, though, which is bad. I'm not very good at jumping on the bike, but put my foot over and push a bit. I was slow at getting feet in to shoes, had a few people pass me who had probably put their shoes on in transition. What would you do differently?: Work on getting feet in to shoes much faster while pedaling. Or, get up to speed, then put shoes in is probably the tactic I should pursue. Bike
Comments: For a course this short, I don't drink anything on the bike. Many others should heed that advice. I see folks with 16-32 oz of liquid on their bike before the race even starts. That's an extra 1-2 pounds they are carrying for a 30 minute bike ride! My tactic: I put a piece of gum on my handlebars, secured with tape. and put it in my mouth when I first start biking. Keeps saliva going so you don't get cotton mouth. I then only drink on the run IF I need it. What would you do differently?: Legs felt pretty heavy while biking. I KNOW I can bike faster than this. I think legs may have been a bit tired from the swim??? So, practice a few more swim to bike bricks. I believe I dismounted too early. They had two dismount lines, which I think the first one just meant you entered the dismount area, second one meant you had to dismount by that line. I dismounted right before the first dismount line. My dismount was VERY smooth, I'd give it a 10! Much better than the dismount I did 10 days prior in training when I crashed when foot slipped off top of shoe. Still got the scabs on the feet from that one. Transition 2
Comments: Had to rack my bike twice as it ended up on top of someone elses handle. Next time, I wouldn't care, as long as its standing on the rack! Probably lost a few seconds there. What would you do differently?: Just rack bike and go, as long as bike is standing, who cares!!! Pay a little more attention to how many women in my age group have already racked their bikes so I know how many are in front of me on the run. I passed two women in my AG on the run. Run
Comments: Took one little drink on first lap. Was hoping for a faster run split, but really can't complain. Was pushing HR at 175-180 all the way, so right where I should have been. Legs felt good off the bike, but definitely got better the further I went. What would you do differently?: Do more speed workouts as I know I can run a faster 3 miler in a triathlon than this, which would have moved my AG ranking up in the run, and got me under 1 hour overall. Post race
Warm down: Hydrated and ate a banana and chocolate muffin. Chatted with lots of folks from the Tri Club. Had a small drink of beer in the beer garden. Waited around (too long) for age group awards, then missed my name when it was called. Go figure! What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough training! But, VERY happy for the limited training I've been doing. Need to drop 2-4 more pounds for race shape. Event comments: Great beginner's race as it is short, flat, and fast. Bike might be just a bit technical, but nothing too hard. Technical part lies in the fact that you have about 6 decent turns to make and a few narrow areas. Swim is perfect for a first time open water race as it's very protected in the Bay. I would definitely do this race again as it was very well run, parking is right near the transition area, everything ran on time, its an easy course, and its right near my house. Up right before the alarm at 03:55am. Ate two pieces of toast with soy nut butter and honey, and 1.5 cups of coffee while checking email and then loading up car. Left for race site around 05:20. Was the 4th person to rack bike on my rack for Wave 8, so definitely pays to get there early. Ran into Brad several times, so he and I walked the course together. As he had done it before, he gave me some pointers.
Ran about a mile starting around 06:30 doing dynamic flexibility stretching and several strides. Would have liked to have biked, but didn't want to take the bike out of transition and have to worry about my spot still being secure. Did see someone that had brought a trainer to warmup on, which is a great idea next time. Maybe even bring Mike's bike to warmup on out in the parking lot.
