Swim
Comments: Course was really nice. There were A LOT of people that were slower that I was so half the battle was getting around them. About 100m into the race, I found my pace (which is really a nice long stroke) and I started passing people. On the second leg, I saw the Pewaukee PD pulling out the guy who passed away during the race. I thought he just passed out but I guess something serious happened. The last leg of the swim, I drafted a few guys and was able to get to the shore in record time. I got out of the water and felt strong, got my feet rinsed off and headed to my bike. What would you do differently?: I started on the inside of the pack and it was REALLY busy. Until I can get my pace up, I think I should start on the outside and work my way in. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went GREAT! My cap wouldn't come off and I thought I was going to pull out my hair. What would you do differently?: I didn't have my Velcro undone on my shoes so it took me an extra couple of seconds to get on my shoes. Bike
Comments: The course was a little different than what I initially trained for. The first hill on Prospect was KILLER. As we went through Deer Haven and passed a lot of people. I was holding a maximizing my pace on the downhill portions and making good time on the uphill portions. I was passed by a lot of faster riders on the slight uphills who were in much better shape. Once we got to Gold road, it was a sinch getting to Maple. Once we go to Maple, I knew that I had to get my pace going on the downhills so I put the bike into the highest gear that I could and pushed all the way down the hill. I was able to coast over the first little hill and keep it going down the second hill. Once I got to the incline that goes up Maple, I was volleying for position with this older lady. We joked that I would pass her on the straightaways and on the down hills and she would catch me on the inclines. Highway KE was a nice incline that I was able to pass a few people on. Again, once KE peaks it's all downhill from there. I was able to stick with a guy the entire downhill and once we made it to Glacier, I BARELY made it up the first hill but I pushed and as best I could. Again, once Glacier peaked, it was all downhill from there. I passed a few people and made it to the straightaway to get to T2. 200 yards before T2, I shifted so that my cadence went above 100RPM's and so that I was pulling up with my legs. 100 yards before T2, I unstrapped my shoes and rode with my feet on top of my shoes. It was the best feeling in the world (as corny as it sounds) because in my training I have never been able to coordinate that, and it just worked! I dismounted and headed to my station. Had a bottle full of ZYM and protein for the race which helped out A LOT! What would you do differently?: Nothing... Transition 2
Comments: Another smooth transition Run
Comments: When I got out of T2, my hips were TIGHT. I started running and was leaning too far forward so my legs gave out right away (< 100 yards into the race). Once I got up to the school, I finally found my cadence and had to push through the first wave of muscle pain. Once I got through that, my cadence kicked in and I was able to run the rest of the race. Also, I found that if I started walking, IT HURT! Yes, IT HURT TO START WALKING! So I figured I'd run the rest of the way. I made it to the home stretch and saw my wife and mom hanging out. I finished 15 minutes faster than I expected and felt GREAT the entire time. I grabbed some food cheered on the rest of the DONKAI nation as well as any TriWi people I was able to find running. I ran into some people from BT, introduced myself and hopefully made some new training buddies. What would you do differently?: Set my cadence earlier. I freaked out too early and tried to run fast. Plus, I was taking off my hat to douse water on myself. It wasn't until 1.5 miles that I realized that if I dump the water on my HAT, it stays around longer to cool me off. I know... Hilarious. Post race
Warm down: Walked to the end of the road and back. Ate some food and chatted with a few people who had the same jersey on. What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to train more on my run. Event comments: I wasn't able to find my transition times so it's a guess at this point what my times were in and out of the transitions. Also, I am guessing what my individual event times were as well. I looked at my watch once I got in to each transition. There wasn't any drink stations the last 1.5 miles.... I didn't get it. Was it because it was mostly downhill? Last updated: 2009-03-12 12:00 AM

The night before, instead of eating a roast that my wife put on, I stuck with a Gatorade and a HUGE fruit parfait. Lots of strawberries, blueberries, apples, grapes, yogurt and granola. It was by no means a heavy meal but I felt stuffed afterward.
I slept in (45 minutes past my estimated wake-up time) because I forgot to set the type of sound I wanted on my alarm clock (basically making it useless). I got there at 5:30AM and had enough time to get my station setup, get a bite to eat, wait 20 MINUTES in the line for the bathroom and get in a nice swim warm-up. As soon as I got out of the water, it was FREEZING but I had to start waiting in line for my wave.
