Pre-race routine:

Arrived Friday afternoon and did a practice swim. This helped a ton. slept well, woke up and drank some coffee, ate a crunch bar and watched it all happen.
Event warmup:

visit men's room repeatedly before zipping up.
Swim
  • 09m 31s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was really slow for the effort exerted. There was a lot of traffic at the start, then I settled in on the hip of what turned out to be the winner of the first-timers and tracked him most of the way in. As we overtook the previous wave got bottled up again and was dead in the water at the turn bouy. While it seemed the tide was pulling us along, it sure was slow for me. Some have speculated that the distance may have been off.
What would you do differently?:

try to get clear quicker and get into a groove. I never got comfortable in this swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

It was all a blur, but I guess it was ok. dropped a shoe out of the clip after the mount line and had to stop and regroup. never got the shoe on correctly-had the tongue all jammed down by my toes but DIDN'T BUST MY ASS!!!
What would you do differently?:

get my shoes on my feet.
Bike
  • 46m 48s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, the bike went about as expected with no more training than I put into it. It was pleasant, chatted up a few folks along the way and generally enjoyed myself. I survived and DIDN'T BUST MY ASS!!!
What would you do differently?:

get a bike and ride it a lot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Since this is my first race, I have no frame of reference, but I felt like it went ok here.
Run
  • 25m 38s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was nice. This type of course is tough for me with all the twists and turns. I have a hard time changing directions and prefer longer straightaways and gentle curves. Around the 1-mile mark, I literally commented to someone "well look, there are my legs!" and picked it up a bit.
What would you do differently?:

no complaints. this is about what I expected to run.
Post race
Warm down:

beer tent!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training on the bike.

Event comments:

This is an outstanding, well-organized event. Everyone, organizers and racers alike, went out of their way to recognize and support beginners. It was a great day!
