Pre-race routine:

We went to the Wiggles last night, so the boys ended up going to bed late. My sis spent the night so that she could help my wife with the kids at the race. I ate a bowl of honey nut cheerios about 2 hours before the race started. Once again, we got to the race later than I would have liked, but hey, that's life.
Event warmup:

Powergel 15 minutes before the swim start. I swam for about 5 minutes and that was it.
Swim
  • 10m 57s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Yeah, so about that swim...it sucked. I started too far back in the wave and had a tough time going around people. Had I started up front I know I would have swam faster. I really had a tough time seeing the buoys, so I had to trust that the guys I was swimming with knew where it was. I can't complain too much though, since I have not swam much at all this year.
What would you do differently?:

Get my butt to the pool and do some swim training.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Had I gotten to the race earlier I would have snagged a better spot. I didn't, so I did the best I could with what I got. I didn't realize until after the race, but my cap and goggles fell out of my suit sleeve somewhere in transition. I found my cap, but sadly, my goggles seem to have disappeared. Oh well, they were crappy anyway.
What would you do differently?:

GET A BETTER TRANSITION SPOT!!!
Bike
  • 42m 57s
  • 14.8 miles
  • 20.68 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to average 20 on this ride and I did that so I am happy. I was only passed by 3 guys. I passed 2 of them back. I also passed a ton of other people and worked my way up to 18th on the bike. Again, I am really pleased with this ride. I could have probably gone harder, but oh well.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot to pick up a Gatorade at the store, so I filled my bottle with 1/2 kool aid and 1/2 water. This was not a great idea. I had some minor stomach issues but nothing too serious.
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

Another good transition. My flying dismount was perfect! Some dude cut me off as I was on my way out of transition and I almost took a dive, no worries though, I didn't go down.
What would you do differently?:

Go even faster.
Run
  • 27m 7s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a good run for me. I was not passed at all and managed to pass 6 or so people. I got a side ache at the 2 mile turnaround, and had to slow down until it went away. I have cramped up in every running race that I have done in the last 9 months. I have only cramped up on 1 training run. I guess I am just running too hard for my current fitness level. I was very happy that I managed to pass 2 guys in the last 1/4 mile of the race. I saw them aways ahead of me and managed to dig deep and run them down. It was awesome!!!
What would you do differently?:

I need to figure out why the heck I keep getting side aches.
Post race
Warm down:

None really. I took the boys down to the water and played with them for awhile. Then we hung out and ate a bunch of fruit and just enjoyed the beautiful day. I ran into snailfish and it was great to finally put a name with a face.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. Someday when my kids are grown I am sure that I will be able to dominate, but until then, my family is my priority. I feel very blessed to be able to fit in the amount of training that I do without taking any time away from them.

Event comments:

I think this is my new favorite race. The chip timing was a great addition this year. It is the least expensive race around and I like my tech t. The park makes it very family friendly.

It was great to finally meet a fellow BT'er - snailfish. I'm sure more of you were there and I am sorry that I missed you. I'm sure we'll meet someday
