Swim
Comments: Had a great friggin' swim!! The time includes the run to the timing mat, so actual swim was around 29:30. Felt really good out there. Pushed harder the 2nd lap, and actually swam it about 30 seconds faster than the 1st. Ran out of the water, up to the wetsuit strippers!! Was a wee bit disappointed as they were not what I expected :) They ripped that suit off and I ran a few hundred metres to transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I felt really good about the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Had the strippers which was nice. Ran out to transition, and all went smooth. What would you do differently?: Not much went pretty good. Bike
Comments: My plan was to take it easy on the bike. As the run is my weakest, I really wanted to have my legs still for it. The bike was good until I got to a big descent and hit a bump or something as I was passing someone, and it sounded like my back tire was being hit by something! I had to drop behind her and stop half way down the hill to see what was going on. My NEW Garmin cadense sensor had rolled into my spokes. So I turned the sensor out from the spokes and jumped back on. Luckily I didn't bust any spokes and doesnt look like any permanent damage. What would you do differently?: The sensor thing sucked some time off my bike, but I was happy to survive it. Could have cut about at least 3 minutes off my time, but what can you do. Wasn't able to make up any time on the big down hill as I had to stop half way down, but like I said..Happy to not flip off my bike! Transition 2
Comments: Average T2. Ran in changed shoes, dumped the hemet, threw a hat on and off I went. What would you do differently?: I'm trying to learn how to leave the shoes on the pedals and run in with socks on. Working to mixed reviews. Every time I try it, I end up dragging one shoe on the ground. Run
Comments: Run slowed me down overall. It's frustrating when everyone passes you on the run! I got hooked up with a girl who had been with me from about the 3km marker on. We ran up the big hill together and helped push each other in. I was happy to run the 10k around the hour mark. What would you do differently?: I know this is where I need to improve. I look back a few months, and when I ran 10k for the first time, I did it in 1:10. That made me feel better, knowing that I've taken 10 minutes off my time, nevermind after a 40k bike and a swim. Post race
Warm down: Was happy to see Michelle and the girls just before the finish line. Gave them a high-five and ran down the finishing chute. Sat with them a bit, stretched a bit, and chatted. I was thrilled to be under 3 hrs in my 1st Oly!! I had set a goal of 3hrs, but really would have been disappointed I went longer then 3:15. Half-way through the run, I realized that I was on pace to shatter the 3hrs. I felt really good upon finishing, and I know for next time I can push the bike a little more. What limited your ability to perform faster: THE RUN! Its getting there though. I don't want to dwell on the run as I am seeing improvements, but it sucks when everyone passes you on the run. Realizing its not the conditioning that is slowing me down, its the legs. They definintely felt looser on this run. I am happy with a 60 min/10k but I know I can push harder next time. I noticed a little puncture in my wetsuit when I got home. No idea if that was from me or the stripper. Event comments: This has typically been a Half-Iron race. This was the first year they've had an Oly with it. One thing that would have been nice, was having the transition set up with Oly on one side, and Half on the other. As we were all finished and not able to get in to transition for about an hour or so after we finished. They did not want us in there, when some of the Half's were coming in off the bike. Other than that, was a well organized race! 192 finishers and 51 were in my age group! WOW! Welcome to the Olympic 30-39 Male age group. Being a competitive person, 40/51 sucks knowing how well I performed for myself. I know that is why we do this is for ourselves though. I look at where I was 1 1/2 years ago, and if you told me I would be finishing an Oly in under 3hrs I would have thought that it was impossible!! Met another BT'er had a nice morning out there. Ended up going home, and going for a small hike with the girls!! Last updated: 2009-03-18 12:00 AM

Woke up, had a great new pre-race breakfast. 2 pieces of multi-grain toast with PB and honey, with a banana. And a coffee as well. Drove across the city, got unloaded and walked over to the transition area. I love the morning energy!! Chatted to some people of course. 1st Oly -- a little nervous!
Watched the half-iron's go off, got into the wetsuit, splashed around a bit before we were off at 9:15.
