Pre-race routine:

Woke up at Bauers @ 5:30am- realized on the way up i was sick. stuffy, fever, throat, etc. slept ok on the couch. Warmed up my coffee, ate a cliff bar and that's about it. sipped gatorade pre-race and had a gel before leaving transition.
Swim
  • 34m
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

i actually got in the water prior to the start! Frickin freezing- i was trying to stay calm but it was colder than my brain expected. Swam a few yards - hooray. so then we had to stand in line for an hour!! 45 min.?? the sprint started first this year. anywho...chatted with tracyV for awhile and we tried to stay positive! hmmm...started out ok - sighting - breathing - every 20 or so strokes had to come out and get my bearings. then i was swimming and happened to see about 8 turkey vultures circling the water!! freaky i must say... realized half way in -'man this is longer than i'm used to!' got into a rhythm - but still slow.
What would you do differently?:

have someone watch me swim in open water
Transition 1
  • 04m 19s
Comments:

ha ha! this is a long-one. the run from the swim exit to my bike was soooo long. probably because i was racked right next to the bike in/out. by the time i sat down to get the suit off i was so winded - oh well. forgot my glasses in the hullabaloo.
Bike
  • 1h 30m
  • 27.96 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

no major mechanical issues! hooray. chain fell off once... Tried to conserve some energy per my hubby's advice. The course was fun - well marked - well monitored.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

i need those yankz....never even thought to take off my shoes on the bike - hmmmmm.
Run
  • 55h 54m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 9h 00m 06s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Need more bricks....of course. and need to make a DR. appt for overall health stuff before i start pushing too hard.
Post race
Warm down:

i was wiped at the finish!!! couldn't even talk right away to tracey who had finished ahead of me. ate bagels, oranges, water and tried to relax. we checked out results - same age category, racked right next to each other and finished 8 and 9 - her right ahead of me. so funny! it was great having someone to hang out with - great sandwich and beer on the Osthoff grounds. Thanks Tracey!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my brain.... my girth.....ha ha...... transitions.....need more practice at everything!

Event comments:

people kept saying the course has changed and is more challenging then years past. hills were killer! I need to just be proud of my first OLY finish and set goals from this day forward. don't think i'll do another race alone - i was lonesome for my family.

Course: i was so happy to be running! of course i came out too hard! it was practically 1/4 mile just to exit transition. hooked up a girl named jean who had tons of fans! this course had some nice hills- the sun was just starting to come out and it was beautiful. tried to maintain 8:15's but it just didin't happen. my chest was tightening - tried focusing on long breaths - perhaps asthma? has happened before - could be hearth rate i'm failing in monitor? passed tracey as she was headed back. took gatorade at each of the 3 aid stations.
