  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: This was a good, low key race. Definitely need to do a few more things to make it better, but good overall experience. I would not consider for a first HIM. Way too tough a race. The swim, my guess, is always going to be a challenge b/c of the wind coming in from the East. The bike is VERY tough, and a windy day will kill your race. The run isn't that bad. I asked the RD how many participants signed up and he said a little over 100. That means that 40+ ppl DNF (or DNS). That's a fairly high %.

  • Comments: I would definitely consider doing this race again. I enjoyed the challenge of the hills and the low-key atmosphere. And the scenery on the ride was as nice as any race I've done. No idea on the post-race activities, because we were gone but, it would be a fun place to hang out post-race. Good playground for the kids and a swimming area.

  • Comments: This is a very small event (less than 100 competitors). That said, I had a blast and loved the challenge of the course. All the participants were die hards and you could tell they appreciated the work that went into putting the event on. If I dont' do the Gulf Coast HIM next year, I plan on racing The Beast again.

  • Comments: Great race. I think that the people involved in this race really love the sport b/c it is tough. I spoke with a number of people and most have done a lot of races and consider this one of the hardest. The people are so friendly. I wanted to thank all of the volunteers again after the race b/c they made the directions and water etc so much easier for me. I tried to tell each one thanks as I went by. Great event and I would do it again.

  • Comments: I have only two complaints. I am a stickler for the rules, and there were lots of people out there running with ipods/MP3 players. That made me so freaking mad. I wanted to rip them out of their ears, and tell them it was illegal. Of course, I didn't, but I wanted to. Second, and the biggest thing. They had me in the incorrect age-group. I was listed under 25-29 on the finish sheet. I told the RD that was incorrect, and that I should be in the 30-24 AG. I turn 30 in November, so per USAT rules on Dec 31st 2009 I will be 30, I should race the 30-34 AG. I think they had already had the awards ready to be given out, and he said it would stand. I finished 8th OA, but second in the 25-29 AG. Behind the guy with the 29 on his calf I raced throughout the day. I double checked the finish sheet after the awards, and I actually won the 30-34 AG. I am more pissed at myself for not throwing a bigger fit, and noticing it sooner. Oh well, after a HIM I did not have the energy to throw

  • Comments: I want to say thank you to all the people that made this race possible. Plus, the individuals that were maning/womening the aid stations. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT WATER!!!! I actually saw they guy that kept giving me water on the run as I was loading the car. I stopped him, and really thanked him again for his help. He said he used to be a triathlete, and this was his way of giving back. That opened my eyes, so again THANK YOU MR. WATER MAN!!!

  • Comments: This is a great race, and I will admit that I probably shouldn't have chose this as my first half ironman. With that being said, I did learn alot and that no matter how bad I felt and how much my mind was telling me to quit, I kept going. What I need to do now, is learn from my mistakes and apply what I learned for Ironman CDA. BTW...my watch and the race clock had me at 7:56 and some change, but according to the race results on active, they had me at 8:00:53. I like the 7:56 time a little better.
