  • Comments: This race is very well done. Plenty of wonderful volunteers! I thanked as many as I could. I realized after the race that while I was lost in my own head I missed some great aid station themes, like the pirates! From the expo to the bus to the finish everything was well done. My only complaint is that there was NO food at the finish, zero, zip, nada. There was some info about a brunch at one of the local breweries but a) it was several blocks away and b) we heard from another racer that they were turning people away.

  • Comments: This is the best course out there. This race also has the best volunteers, scenery, spectators, and participants. Unfortunately through the canyon there is very limited porta-potties, lots of people on side of the road. If you wanted real food after you race you have to wait around until noon (without beer). We finished at 10:18a. Who in their right mind would wait that long for food, that means the winner has to wait 3.5ish hours for real food, and to receive his award. It would also be nice if they gave out gels at earlier aid stations in the canyon, I didnt find much use for the gels offered at mile 24. The 5 and 10Kers do not need gel! (I think this is why only the last few aid stations had gel).

  • Comments: Well I now know what it means to run with your heart. This was probably the hardest thing I have ever done. Harder than any half Ironman or century ride. The pain I endured was intense, and the mental effort that was required was huge. I felt like my fueling plan was good. The first two hours I drank from my 24 oz bottle of infinite (~300 kcal) and supplimented that with water from the aid stations. I snacked on 3 powerbar gel bursts every 10 minutes, this amounted to about 360 kcal per hour plus another 150 from fluid, that's about 500 an hour. Once I reached mile 18, I drank two 22 oz bottles of gatorade endurance and had two GU "Roctanes" for the remaining 8 miles My aerobic capacity felt really good, I was able to hold several conversations with people along the way and I never really felt out of breath. My legs were definitely hurting though. My left hamstring and knee were acting up. I really had to be cognizant of my left leg. There were times I would land on it

  • Comments: Nice race. My first time, so I don't know how it compares year-to-year. Hammer is the nutrition sponsor, which is nice since I train with Hammer Heed. I tried the "Just Run It" school, and only stopped for water once. Worked pretty good, just had to rehydrate at the end. But be aware that it's COLD at the start. I don't even want to think about the poor people who did the full marathon. An hour earlier, and another ~500 ft higher start. Take advantage of the clothes drop and dump all your warm stuff before the start. I was wearing: a long-sleeve fleece, long-sleeve running shirt, short-sleeve running shirt, warm tights, running shorts, gloves and a running hat, and I was shivering. I'm glad I ditched the outer layer once the race started, but waiting for the race to start was cold. Next year, I'm bringing hand warmers and getting on a later bus (so I don't have to wait as long).

  • Comments: This was a good race and I would recommend it but I loved the Chicago Marathon and can't wait to run it in the fall. The people in Chicago made the race so amazing and having people yelling and cheering the whole 26.2 miles makes the time go by so much faster then this race. Still, a beautiful course and great day!

  • Comments: Great race... beautiful course... AWESOME volunteers. The course seemed long. But its a marathon. I probably will not do this course again... It destroyed me. My Masters trophy is awesome and one of the best that I have seen and the finishers medals were beautiful too!
