  • Comments: I thought the city did a great job of supporting the race, and the race itself was very well organized. This race could be a disaster logistically, but they really have it down. I would do this race again.

  • Comments: Ironman always puts on a good race. The volunteers are always amazing. They probably couldn't help the choppiness of Lake Jordan. The run course, however, is ridiculous. A June race in North Carolina all on asphalt with no shade is complete misery. The run course must be changed.

  • Comments: This was the most mentally grueling race I have been in, and I've completed one half-iron distance before, as well as several marathons. The course definitely demanded concentration and careful race execution, and the heat and my muscle cramps definitely instilled some doubt into my performance. I would do this race again (with different preparation) and will consider it for next year. The only chaotic part was getting my T1 bag--the process was to hand out at this fence and wait for a volunteer to get your bag--kinda analogous to standing at a bar waiting for a drink. Had to be sorta persistent to get someones attention. WTC could set up a much more orderly process to move people through quicker.

  • Comments: Driving up to Raleigh Friday and doing the expo and packet pick up took a load off of Saturday. One thing was the 35 minute drive from T2 to the swim start and T1. Once the bike was dropped off there was no going back to check it so you had to make sure everything wsa good to go. Other than that it was a great race. The volunteers were great. and there were lots of aid stations. If I never do this race again its only because of the hills.

  • Comments: The IM guys took their game up a notch this year- wonderful support, loads of pre-race info, etc. Thanks Brian Myrick for all your responses to questions- it was great. The spectators and supporters/volunteers were amazing- best I have ever had. It was a really fun race, except for the painful parts, but those translate into memories in time, and thats OK.

  • Comments: The volunteers at this race are AMAZING! I should know, I was one of them Saturday, and raced on Sunday ;). Still, this is not a cyclist-friendly area by motorists, and there will be backlash against the race by the motoring public. Which I hate. It's such a good event! Oh, and did I miss the beer tent? Thought we had one of those last year...

  • Comments: This was the inaugural year for Ironman 70.3 Raleigh. Very nice venue. Great race except for the hilly run course which a lot of athletes were complaining about/not prepared for. I guess we all underestimated the elevation profile. Interestingly, the bike elevation profile looked just as bad in retrospect, but didn't feel nearly as bad. I think once everyone gets the post race reports, they will be prepared and times should improve next year. I highly recommend "The Pit" barbeque restaurant for a very delicious post race dinner/reward. It is highly rated on Yelp and in walking distance of the main hotels (.3 miles) near the finish line(Sheraton and Marriot). We stayed at the Sheraton which was fine, but under some renovation construction. The Marriot seemed slightly nicer and was a few more dollars a night, but did not have three rooms left when we booked.

  • Comments: Outstanding execution of the race. The Fayetteville Street was marquee. The crowd and volunteers were world class and it was an inaugural race. The point to point bike segment was additional -- but not overwhelming -- logistical challenge. The pros who turned out were also clearly impressed. May be some complaints that the bike course wasn't hard enough but I think the back end rollers were enough of a challenge especially if you didn't mind your pace. The hills midway through the run were all fair game and though hard, reasonable. However, they were not as advertised on the maps etc. and therefore caught everyone by surprise. (Two loops?) To my great surprise, I finished well enough to earn a roll-down slot to Las Vegas for the championships. For that reason alone, I may have rose colored glasses about the race but I've been to nearly 20 races and this really was an excellent combination of venue, competition, course and the people.

  • Comments: Overall the race was great even though my performance was way sub par. Leading up to the race I had a foot injury for the last month so I ran very little. I was severely under prepared for the heat. Two weeks before the even I had a crash on the bike that threw me off my training plan. When trying to figure out my plan I figured that I could hit sub 6:00 even with my training set backs. Coming off the bike I knew I only needed a 2:15 half marathon to get close to 6:00 so I thought I could get there but I was completely wrong. I finished my first HIM and have a good swim and a good bike and learned a lot. This now gives me motivation to go attempt my next one and get the things right that I screwed up on this one. All in all I'm happy that i finished and didn't feel too bad after the race was over, but a bit disappointed in the final result on the run.

  • Comments: Really liked this. The ice and sponges on the run were amazing, the volunteers were fantastic, crowd support was fun on the bike, etc. Bit of a logistical pain with the two transitions and things being centered on Raleigh, but the satellite lots were great for me. I am actually thinking I will do this again next year! I swore I wouldn't. But I think I will. Great event. Better than White Lake, and about on par with B2B in my opinion. It was nice to do some training with Bill and Scott and got to know them a little better. And spending a lot of the weekend talking through the race with Daryn was fun. He had an amazing race so hopefully will come back and do it again.

  • Comments: Could've used an aid station it seems between the last one past Meredith and the far one up at the Art Museum. That was a long stretch to me without anything, and there's a nasty stretch between. Overall: My goal for the race was a 5:14 (not accounting for heat). That was a pipedream, 5:30 would've been more realistic, so I'm pleased I suppose with a 5:34:28. I had a buddy starting one wave later at 7:26 (Louis Holdstock), and we were joking last week about where I'd catch him on the run(he outswam me by a large amount). I ended up coming up to him with about 300m to go on the run. I touched his back, and he looked over and smiled. We ran in together, but I hung back and let him cross 1 second ahead. It was the sportsmanlike thing to do :). Thoughts: Each of these events is a data point for me. I find out interesting things about myself each time. One thing I keep coming back to is the swim. I've got to figure this thing out if I'm going to keep doing these events. That

  • Comments: Awesome volunteers! They kept us going and made this race feasible. Ironman did a great job organizing and certainly provided a challenging course. All the competitors did a great job and helped push me to the finish faster than any HIM i have done to date; new PR for me.
