  • Comments: Post race I wondered if I could have gotten through the pain. It was a tough decision, but I think it was wise. One thing I regret was hiding from my friends how messed up my ankle was. I don't think I wanted to say out loud how much the pain effected everything. Swimming inflamed it. Riding hurt but was bearable (when I had not swam for 1.5 hours prior to the ride) and I could walk. Telling others would have meant admitting to myself that my chances of finishing were slim. I am writing this recap 1.5 weeks post surgery, and feeling as good as I could about the race. Prior to surgery the doc thought that I could have an inflamed ligament that was getting pinched, a separate issue from the bone spur. When the doc went in to remove the spur and scope the area around the ligament he found that it was barely intact and most likely the main culprit of the pain I was feeling. He removed it completely (apparently it's not a needed piece, about half of the population isn't even born with that

  • Comments: Since I'm just a lurker here, not sure if any of you will ever read this report. But if anyone does, I can't thank the donkeys enough for all of the help, advice, encouragement, and support posted here. I've read this forum religiously for the past year. All the locals for their first-hand knowledge and updates on the course (since I'm an out-of-towner), DB and Lisac957 for the advice they gave my wife on spectating, 1stTimeTri for volunteering (of course, being a lurker I didn't introduce myself). This community is such an asset to have. I didn't know what to expect coming in to the race. It was both harder and easier than I ever imagined, which I realize makes no sense. There's something surreal about starting a race with a beautiful sunrise over the lake, and not finishing until after sunset. There's so many things about this day that I'll never forget, but the greatest moment was when my son told me I'm his favorite superhero. He said I'm the real Ironman, not like the fake

  • Comments: I wish I could have finished earlier so I could have enjoyed some post race festivities!!! I think medical should be open later for the late finishers. Sometimes it takes a while after we finish before we know how bad we really are.

  • Comments: Hard to imagine a better Ironman. Crowd support amazing, Volunteers spectacularly organized. I do wish they would stop taking away some things like the free CD-Recaps.

  • Comments: I can't imagine a better orgainzed and supported race. I have been to Lake Placid, as well, but would really like to see/participate in one of the non-branded IMs, as well.

  • Comments: If it was not for my dismal nutrition plan, I think I would have made my "secret goal time" pretty easily. I think I trained appropriately for each of the disciplines based on my goal time. In every race I have ever completed, anxiety and nutrition have been my biggest limiting factor. I got in to triathlon four years ago after being diagnosed with pre-hypertension and being told by my doc that I needed to exercise. I was a little worried that my chronic asthma would limit me, but four years later I'm only affected by asthma when I'm not working out.... I could probably babble on about this race for months before submitting my race report so I'll end it ...........> HERE

  • Comments: The good: The volunteer and crowd support at this race is great. I wish I was coherent enough to appreciate all the fans lining State Street and the hills on the bike. I was very concerned about the road quality on the bike course going into the race, but it turned out not to be a problem. They repaved some sections just in time for the race and if you run 110 PSI you won't feel most of the bumps. The bad: The run aid stations ran out of cola very early. Some speculate that it's because people didn't like the new Powerbar perform drink and took more cola than usual. I didn't like the finisher's shirt because it's a tech shirt. I would rather have a cotton shirt and even tried to buy one at the expo but they were sold out. Definitely shop the expo early. The ugly: This race has serious issues with capacity. The swim is far too crowded, especially in the 1:05-1:10 range. The bike course is very crowded as well. If you have a goal of reaching T2 within 8 hours, you

  • Comments: This ended up being one of the best weekends ever! I really enjoyed spending time w/ family and friends participating in a sport I truly love. Doing the race w/ so many teammates made a world of difference too...I know it wouldn't have been the same if only a couple had done it. We are truly blessed to have the ability to compete and enjoy such an fun hobby. The race itself was perfect from the standpoint of organization, volunteers and on-course support/nutrition. After being treated like a king by the volunteers I feel obligated to pay it forward by volunteering more often at races. The course was tough, but fair. Weather was great. I would highly recommend this race to those considering it.

  • Comments: It is an Ironman. They have their act together and run great races. The only reason I don't give it a 5 is due to the crap Perform drink they serve. I would highly recommend IMWI. The crowd support is over the top.

  • Comments: So, IM number 4 is in the books. 4 in the last 4 years. Also during this time period we have had our two boys, sold our house, built a new house, had two record years for my business. Not excuses but probably not the best time to get into IM's. I did IM Lou last August, and I think outside of a pub run in December, May 15 was my first workout since Lou. That day I thought there is no way I would even finish WI much less hit any goals. But training went good and fitness came back fairly fast. My weight was a real issue and a course like WI makes you pay for extra lbs that I was carrying. So already signed up for CDA in June and hopefully number 5 will be a lucky number. Life is much more stable now, hopefully less distractions and since I have been training for such a small time frame compared to most, we are moving right on to training for next year. Mentally I feel fresh, I don't hate my bike or the thought of swimming or running. My legs felt great the day after the race and

  • Comments: Last year was my first IM and it was simply magical. I unfortunately compared this year to that race, and between me breaking my big toe 2 weeks before the race, them running out of Coke, not getting my size finisher shirt, running out of finisher items at the expo, the swim being too cramped, etc, this year was a bit of a disappointment. Crossing the finish line, however, is an amazing experience no matter how many times you do it, and is what will ultimately bring me back to the IM distance!

  • Comments: Love, love, love this race. The crowd was at a much higher energy level than last year due to the weather being more pleasant. I was not able to sign up for next year but will volunteer and be ready to go in 2012. Even though my time did not live up to my expectations, I am very happy with this race. I had a blast and that's all that matters.

  • Comments: I will do this again.....but first I am racing IM Cozumel next year. I graduate from Dental school in May of 2012 and then begin my time in the Navy, so next year may be my last for a year or two until I figure out what I can and can not do while being a Navy Dentist. ALL Navy Tri Team? Gotta get faster. Anyway, Ironman racing is the best thing in the world. That finishing stretch, at 8:45 or at 17 hours is life affirming. I'd suffer like that again and again and again to have that feeling of triumph at the line....and hearing your name...."Matthew Priess You are an Ironman for the Second Time"..... I hope to do this for the rest of my life all over the world......Love this sport!!!!!

  • Comments: Fans where amazing. On one hill I did a wheelie for some fans that then erupted with cow bell and applause. Got a cramp from doing the wheelie on that crazy steep hill, but it the energy I received back from the crowd greatly overshadowed it. Next Ironman!! Two or Three years I think.

  • Comments: Wisconsin is a special race for me, it always will be. It was my first, it's where my family lives so I get to stay with my parents, I've made great friends there, and the course is spectacular. I'm already looking forward to 2011.

  • Comments: I can't thank the volunteers enough! Your hard work and encouragement gave me the strength to finish. I may never have a chance to do another ironman, the cost in time and money makes it tough. I also know that my training wasn't what it could have been, for a number of reasons. That being said, for one special day I was able to do something I had trouble sometimes believing was possible. It was a dream come true.

  • Comments: I wanted to stick around but after a while I just wanted a shower and bed so we got my gear and headed out. What a beautiful day, we couldn't ask for any better conditions. I may actually have to get a coach or plan for next year but with my life it is not easy. The next morning I asked my wife if I should sign up for 2011 with my brother and she said absolutely if I want to. Support of the famliy is crucial and I know that I am one lucky man. Thanks again to every one out there that made the day possible.
