  • Comments: This is a great event! It's a very fast course, and everything is scenic, all the way, unlike some courses which really highlight that (showing you pics of the one pretty stretch of an otherwise nondescript 56 mile bike course), and then don't deliver. It really showcases the best of what Oregon has to offer. The swim does take a long time to get started (about 90 minutes to get everyone in the water, not counting the walk over) and the set-up (which I guess is standard for a downriver course) can get annoying. Likewise, transition, especially T1, is very long and slow, but given the steep riverbank and the popularity of the race, there is really no way around this. Ditto for the somewhat hazardous first part of the bike leg. Just be aware and don't do crazy stuff on the curves and railway underpasses. Hazards are very well-marked, but every year there are several serious crashes. Run is beautiful ,and aid stations (9 or 10 of them total) are very well-stocked. Great post-race food

  • Comments: I have already reviewed this race (in 2021) and not a lot has changed. They have addressed some of the issues from their first year. The swim start is still a bit nuts (herding 2500+ people to walk 1.2 miles in semi-darkness through the woods) but now they start four at a time, so at least it's more efficient. Still the same issues with sighting and ambiguous course in the river. But hey, it's really fast! T1 is awful, but kind of inevitable given the steep riverbank in the park and the popularity of this race. The bike course is beautiful and hazards are well-marked. Just be prepared for ejection drama due to rough roads and numerous railroad track crossings. The run course has been changed somewhat and is now a bit shadier with a much more pleasant start and end (a dramatic pedestrian bridge over the river) and the entire run is now in the nature preserve near the river, with zero traffic. Volunteer support and run aid stations are outstanding, much more like a full IM. If you

  • Comments: 70.3 is probably my least favorite distance race but overall pretty pleased with the result. The total time (adjusted for the crazy swim) is on par with my PR set in 2014. Over the last few years my attitude about long course racing has improved and I think I'm starting to see that in the results (good race here, IM in 2019 is my PR). Getting better with age? Maybe just smarter!?

  • Comments: This is IM's first event in Oregon to my knowledge and the course did a great job of showcasing what makes our area of the state awesome--the river, the wine country and valley farmlands with mountains visible in the distance on both sides, quiet riverside trails winding through woods and meadows. I like that much of the run was on dirt/gravel roads. That being said, there are a few logistics that need cleaning up! The river swim was fun and fast, but the start logistics were a mess. With that size of field, and possibly pandemic concerns, they need to change the set-up. We were crowded together, some people for over two hours, on a narrow bike path, going down a ramp two by two like a really poorly managed Noah's ark boarding. Having to cross and then re-cross the river and pass through a very shallow area of rapids (about 6 inches deep) frightened and confused a lot of OWS novices. As I was swimming toward buoy #1, I saw it was moving. Thought it was current at first and then realized
