- Description: Getting there:- Allow 1hr 20 mins from Claremont travelling up Toodyay Rd trucks could slow you down.
Road Surface:- Dead road, coarse bitumen, wear your comfy nicks. No dangerous potholes, some gravel on side roads did encroach on to the course but was not a problem and easily spotted.
Course Difficulty:- The course is straight forward west out of town along railway line over rail bridge, over Avon River 43 kms along Julimar Rd to Chittering Rd and return. There are no tricky corners some of the descents are fast but all relatively safe for the average cyclist. The course is on an open road so the speed limit is 100kms, the visibility was good and the roads are wide enough for vehicles to give cyclists plenty of room.
Hills:- Yes there are some! The first climb is only 6kms from Toodyay so I would suggest that everyone warms up pre-event, this first hill gets you up on to the top of the escarpment, and you will be able to settle into a rhythm with some undulating hills. The next testing climb is probably somewhere around the 25km mark which is a substantial rise that kicks up in three sections, the beauty of it being you don’t see the last two sections until you think you have the first conquered.(so save a little bit). There is a good downhill on the other side. We turned around at the 30km mark so the last 15kms is a mystery, I would suggest we had just come off the escarpment so it wouldn’t be too testing. As with all out and back courses we got to do the hills in reverse, we had probably ridden our legs in by this stage so didn’t find the going as tough. A couple of the hills you get a good run up on so you are halfway up them before they start to pinch. The final descent to the Avon River is one to look forward to and we were able to get up a full head of steam.
