What are you waiting for? Get out there and sign up for your first triathlon. Do it now because spring seems like a long way off!
Well, I said to stay tuned for my next race...That was a year and 4 races ago! My kids are no longer rolling their eyes at me. In fact, they're now racing! Ever seen kids’ triathlons? They’re so great to experience! They are miniature athletes, all marked up and chipped! My kids' favorite thing is to go to school on Monday still marked and wearing their medals!
I raced my first race last year. I compared myself to a well-oiled machine…a manual hand mixer, to be exact. That morphed into the well equipped, yet still Merlot guzzling, enchilada eating, soccer Mom triathlete...and triathlete Mom. I raced that same race this year and shaved 20 minutes off last year's time. Not bad!
See, there is hope for everyone! That swim that seemed so long now has me talking other racers into how easy it is when we're poolside before the race (all while comparing toenail polish.) I'm still not that fast, but I posted a 1:30 sprint tri time this season. It always makes me happy to know that someone like me can actually run a race, and then improve THAT much, still love to train, AND have a full life outside of training!
The race this year was like coming home. I was much more relaxed, confident, and ready to compete. It's awesome to feel butterflies waiting for my turn in the pool, knowing that I can calm myself and finish that same swim that scared the hell out of me a year ago. It also feels great to pass people on the bike, although I feel even more compelled to yell encouraging things like, "They have bloody marys up ahead!" and "Great job! Let's go!" along the way. I still have a lot of improvement left, but welcome the fun and camaraderie that goes with the sport of triathlon.
What are you waiting for? Get out there and sign up for your first triathlon. Do it now because spring seems like a long way off! You'll panic when you click the registration button, and then have a couple of months of calm procrastination, and then it will be summer and that race will be right around the corner. You'll train just enough to be dangerous. Finish the race and then plot how to better your time. (This means you're hooked and my fiendish plan worked!) Good luck- I'll look for your race confirmations soon!!!
