The rider gently presses her fingers on the brakes. Her bike slows down. The light has just turned red so she knows she’s going to have to do the inevitable – figure out how to stop her bike.
Her initial slow down is perfect. The bike slowly begins to stop its momentum. Like clockwork she twists her right cleat ever slow slightly and out pops her foot signaling the unhinging of the cleat. She sighs. Everything seems to be working just as her Local Bike Shop manager told her. But suddenly her momentum is going to the left not the right. She forgets to put her right foot on the ground. She doesn’t have a chance to maintain her stability. And BLAM! She falls over. Like a toddler learning how to walk, she crashes to the ground, hitting her head. But it’s her pride that hurts worse than the pain in her elbow. Curses, she screams. Curses upon Charles Hanson, who invented clipless pedals, making a system that actually made your legs extensions of your bike. [.....]
