Pre-race routine:

as usual, i woke up an hour before my alarm was to go off. so, i did some laundry, took a shower, painted my toenails. made some oatmeal and coffee. my mom arrived around 7:15. kelly (kelpeng) arrived about 20 minutes later...and off we went. we got to the race and steve (hikergrb), emily (bikergrrl), e's husband, and dan (acesfull) were already there. the other BT folks arrived shortly there after = tom (matchman), nora (norakramer), roger (rabkaman), and joe (joer). it felt like things were being set up just for US. it was awesome. we got to check out the bikes and whatnot before getting ready for the swim.
Event warmup:

swam about 400, including a couple TI form drills.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1707 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

felt fine on the swim. was hoping to do 1700...but this is fine. i took two advil, so my right arm (dog bike & tetanus shot) weren't bothering me much.

heee hee. nice slip, autumn. dog BITE.
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

10 minutes transitions. love it. got changed into my tri suit, had something to drink, fished out my nano. ahr was 147.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 7.79 miles
  • 15.58 mile/hr
Comments:

i've been dethrowned! last year i was 1st on the bike...now i'm 5th? BAH! i was pushing pretty hard, as my heart rate would indicate...but even STANDING at a high resistance and at a high cadence, i couldn't get the mph to go over 20 mph. on the trainer and on the bikes at the gym, i've been averaging 16-19 mph...so i really do blame the bike :)
What would you do differently?:

i didn't really stick to my plan on the bike (similar to that for the run...start out slow for the first 5, then ramp up). mainly it was because the bike's settings were so different and it was really hard to get it up to what i felt was a comfortable cadence and still have a speed i thought was normal for me. i started out slow but my speed was about 10 mph. what!? i tried ramping up faster, but then i got tired really fast. i don't like these bikes.
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

another 10 minute transition. i walked over to caribou and got a mocha, then went for a massage and a pedicure. ahr 152.
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.31 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

it was getting HOT in the room we were in. they needed more fans. we were all pretty red in the face when it was all over. i stuck to my plan, sort of. started out slow at 6mph for the first 5 minutes, then went up to 6.5, then 6.7, then 7. got to 7 faster than i should have, because my hr went up to 190 right away, went back down to 6.5 and then worked my way back up. 7.5-8 mph for the last minute. woo hoo!
What would you do differently?:

not ramp up as quickly.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around a bit. tried to go outside to cool off (it was in the teens, but i didn't care...i was HOT!). hung out with the BT folks, ate some orange slices (oh my goodness were they good), picked up the schwag (an awesome little sling bag w/ the race logo on it, a winter cap w/ the race logo embroidered on it, another travel much, key chain, and t-shirt...i LOVE the stuff from this race!). headed down to the locker room for a good hose down.

after we all met up after we were all cleaned up, we walked over to the loring pasta bar in dinky town for brunch. food was good, service and price was awful, company was great, and the women's bathroom is BEAUTIFUL!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

feeling unfamiliar with the bikes was the main thing....or having a bad bike. honestly. i don't know if it was just MY bike, but the resistance seemed off to me. my bike distance last year was better, but i wasn't in as good a shape and i don't remember having to work as hard to get it up to what i would consider my 'normal' speed range. this was frustrating, but i just tried to let it go and have fun.

Event comments:

these are the official results. i have been dethrowned as the #1 on the bike in my age group...and i blame the damn bike! the woman who heads the tri team i'm on was the top woman. go jeanne! she got 15.77 miles! she is a rock star. i got a sad 12.07. sigh. right in between the first year and last year...so no PR for me. maybe next year. since they split the results by gender, its going to take too much time to compare myself to the boys...so i'm just going w/ the gender numbers.

distances: 2005 = 11.21, 2006 = 12.82, 2007 = 12.01 (i blame my bike!)

i really enjoy this race. of the two indoors i've done, i'll rate this as 'the best!' i've done it the last three years and it is CONSISTENTLY WELL RUN. it was so fun to have so many of the MN BT folk there. we were the first wave, and it was ALL BTers (other than my mom, who technically IS a BTer since she has an account here). anyway, since we were the first folks there, it felt like all the preparations were just for US. it was such a nice feeling to know everyone in our wave. my mom felt so welcomed and a part of the group, which was fantastic. i will probably do this race every year. indoors are not as enjoyable as outdoor races, but they provide a different sort of challenge...and racing as a group is something that we wouldn't have been able to do as easily otherwise.

I GUESS THE RABIES IS SINKING IN!!!!
