  • Comments: Overall it was a very fun race, and well organized. I also enjoyed the course, it was well laid out and not too easy or difficult. I liked running through some of the more quaint areas of Richmond. Volunteers were plentiful and very helpful and encouraging. I would definitely do this race again.

  • Comments: Great course and event. Highly recommended. Great way to end my race season! [Sunday morning final thoughts] Wow, do I hurt today. Not so much the muscles - more the joints. Back feels surprisingly good. Knees and feet are in serious pain! Stairs-OMG. Also downloaded the Garmin data. Pretty much as described above. Slowest mile was mile 23 at 11:47. Basically three segments of the race (as planned) - through mile 17.5 at or under 9min/mi pace. Miles 17-21 transition to shuffling, losing speed from 9:30 to 10:30 min miles. Miles 22-26 - just get it done. All under 12 though and "ran" the last two miles. 23 and 24 were definitely the low points. If anything, seeing the Garmin data made me feel better. Also just remembered I lost the ability to do "time math" around mile 22 or 23. Tried to figure out what I needed to do to break 4:10 and totally lost a mile in there somewhere. One thing to note is that my pace was better at the end of the marathon than on the HIM.

  • Comments: As this is my first stand alone marathon, I have nothing to compare it to except Ironman. Keep that in mind when I say there wasn't enough water support. I don't know what the standard is for marathons, but I would have liked to see water stations at every mile. It's possible there was water at Mile 16, but the volunteers seemed to be only handing out Gummi Bears when I came thru. My wife walked thru 16 after watching me at Mile 15 and said she didn't see any water station, but did see lots of spectators handing out bike bottles of water and bottled water, which leads me to believe that at least, there was a period of time where there was no water at 16. Also, there were what appeared to be random people handing out orange slices on the course. Not sure they were with the race or not. Elevation-wise, this is certainly not a PR type course, but I would imagine there are LOTS more hillier races. Good crowd support. One small hill on otherwise flat final 8 miles. Downhill finish.

  • Comments: Fun race! I'd say it was a little tough for me because I wasn't trained for hills. The wet washcloths are all that I imagined they would be. What a lifesaver. Next time, i'll figure out what types of shots they are having earlier so I can practice iwth them. i couldn't find CLIFF anywhere so I had to carry my own, which got heavy. What a fun race with lots of fans and a beautiful city to run in. It was great to run by so many familiar places and to have a great running buddy to keep me going. I would do this race again, but would train for hills!

  • Comments: Richmond was a very well run and organized race. It was my first full marathon, so I don't really have any other marathon to compare it too, but other than it being more hilly than expected I had a very good experience. There weren't too many places that there wasn't spectators, so it seemed that you were always given a hand of encouragement. Running through the residential areas was good, there were many homes that offered junk food and oranges. The only other thing I would say to someone who was thinking about doing this race is, if someone tells you it is flat---They don't know what they are talking about.

  • Comments: This is called Americas friendliest Marathon. It just ight be. The people were great and friendly with lots of supporters along the route to keep you going. Bands were set up along the way and there was even some junk food stations set up along the way and even one spot were they were handing out beer. This is a good race to run.

  • Comments: I honestly can't say too much about the post-race activities. I only hung around the finish area for 15-20min while I got my legs back and then walked to the hotel, showered, and hit the road for home. It seemed like they had plenty of food and drinks around though.

  • Comments: This race is a great first marathon. There were 3500 runners but plenty of volunteers, very organized and well run but it's not one of the top tier races like Boston or New York. The course is not flat but doesn't have any super tough hills, the people are friendly and everything ran as advertised. The swag left something to be desired but about as expected for a race like this. I would definitely do this race again as it has a nice end of season date that lets me complete the triathlon schedule but still have time to train for a marathon

  • Comments: I thought that this was a great race. Not huge like the last few events I've been in, there were about 4700 marathoners. I felt like I had room to run without constantly dodging people, the local crowd was great for support, pleanty of water stations and post race food even for those finishing at the back of the pack.
