• Comments: Simply the best supported, organized, and fun race I have ever done. My biggest regret is that I didn't get to fully take in the weekend and enjoy the area. I think I'll do the 70.0 again, but what I really think would be fun would be to run the Olympic on Saturday and then volunteer on Sunday. I've become a bit complacent in my race reporting over the last year or two, this is the first race report in a while that I was excited about writing.

 • Comments: Most of the guys that show up for this race are studs, no way around it. They put me in my place. Separated the men from the boys and I was just happy to get to the finish line. This is definitely a bucket-list race for anyone that enjoys climbing. As someone posted earlier, the endorphin rush at the end is totally worth it. Beautiful scenery, great local and spectator support, and Kyle Yost puts on a great show. Two thumbs up.

 • Comments: Overall time was 5:57:43, a good 90+ minutes faster than my 2008 time of 7:29+. Plus no tears…finished like a man. I consider the score settled at this point. Time was good for 10th place AG (out of 68). Interestingly enough, in 2008 I also finished 10th AG (albeit out of only 18 in AG) and my time this year would have been good for second place in AG in 2008. This tells me that since receiving the distinction as being the hardest triathlon in the world from Triathlete magazine a lot more studs are coming out to race it. On top of it all I will be receiving my second brick for making it up The Wall without falling or unclipping. So “another brick in the wall” will be bearing my name in Westernport.

 • Comments: When I previewed the bike course with some BT buds, I said this race would probably be a "one and done" kind of race for me. I completely take that back. The scenery, the spectators, volunteers, and everything else made this an awesome event, and one I'd definitely do again. I'd also recommend it - with the caveat that you should be a strong cyclist before really attempting. I thought the shwag was good - I loved that we got a tech T and arm warmers. One minor quibble is the lack of a finisher's medal. I know most people say they don't care and it helps keeps costs down (a major plus!), but I just love having a medal to show for the efforts. I guess I'll have to settle for a brick with my name on it. :-) The post race food was great. I'm a southern boy at heart, so pulled pork it just about the best post race food I can imagine. Couple that with ice cream, and you've got a winner. I loved signs all over the bike and run course. Each and every one made me chuckle.

 • Comments: i basked in the feeling that i completed something i had been training for for the last 6 months. all the early morning runs and swims, the time on the trainer, everything. i completed the Savageman triathlon and i earned a brick, something i can go back to years later and remind myself of this occassion. thanks to all of you guys whom ive talked with in the discussion forum, shared Inspires with, and had the oportunity to meet. congratulations to all of you who finished this race. Kyle, thank you for such an awesome race. the champions dinner was superb, the shirts are awesome, the brick idea is the bomb, so many helpful and friendly volunteers, every aspect of the race was perfectly executed. What a great place and what a great race. I'm going to try and talk some others in to doing this race in the future because it is SO worth the pain.

 • Comments: This really is a great race. It is savage and brutal and may bring you to the brink, but the payoff of crossing that finish line is worth it. Either that, or I am just a sick son-of-a-batch.

 • Comments: I take 100% responsibility for what went wrong out there. It wasn't a sodium deficit. It wasn't hammer nutrition products. It wasn't that the coke was fizzy and not flat. I simlply raced this too aggressively for my current fitness. Unfortunately, I'm on the down-swing from being very fit this summer for my ironman... which meant I was able to deceive myself into thinking everything was fine... until it wasn't. Nothing below is an excuse... I should have made adjustments to all of these realities... but I'm recording them so I can learn from my mis-execution of this race: I think savageman is hard to pace. The bike is just so hard, and you spend so much time mashing in your easiest gear at a cadence of 40-60 and a HR near your max... and you know it's supposed to hurt... but the line between really blowing up your legs and just regular old savageman pain is very grey. I noticed my HR was pretty high at several parts of the ride where it shouldn't have been. You have to

 • Comments: Like that, it was all over. I completed the race. 1100 miles of biking, 600 miles of running, 82000 yards of swimming - 9 months of training. And the race - completed. Never before had I ever experienced the following feeling after a race. Thrice before I had felt it for others - Mom & Dad's Half-Mary, Melissa & Adam's little Andrew, and Bonnie's high-honors graduation. Once before I felt it within myself - completing Marine Corps Boot Camp. As I walked away from the finish line towards transition I felt it again. This was for all the inspiration my family had unknowingly given me. That's when it washed over me. And I felt... Proud.

 • Comments: This is a well run and organized race. The course is well marked with very good directions. All the major climbs had a sign giving the length and grade. The inspiration signs were very entertaining and funny. There were plenty of aid stations on the bike (3) and on the run (seemed like around every corner) and they were well placed. The support and volunteers were on the job and very helpful. The race was on time and the Race Director was on the ball. The only thing I forgot and regret is thanking the RD in person. I guess an email will do as well. The event has a higher purpose, to raise money for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. This is a non-profit public charity for which this race proceeds goes towards. The venue is fantastic with a great atmosphere in a beautiful State Park. There is plenty of parking around at the race site and nice beach for the kids. The venue has showers to clean up after the race. The SavageMan has a very cool web site with tons of info.

 • Comments: Overall, like I said earlier, I'm just really glad I tried SavageMan. Although it was my first HALF and one of the most diffcult ones around I think long-term it's going to help me with my preperation physically and more importantly mentally! I love the way my season ended b/c I was able to end on Personal bests at each distance. Granted this is my first half but for me to finish and feel ok doing this particular half....that's a personal best in my book....at least for now! I will definitely re-examine this after Eagleman!!!

 • Comments: I am Savage, hear me shuffle… September 16, 2007. The inaugural Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation’s “Tri-To-Win” Savageman Half-Iron Triathlon had become a race of lore long before the starting gun initiated our battle against the fiercest 70.3 miles in the history of the sport. During months of internet discussions between the triathlon-obsessed, over beer-induced honesty at the quarterly meetings of dozens of triathlon clubs, and on countless group rides commencing any steep climb, a resounding “no way in hell” respect for Savageman’s brutality was interjected only occasionally by the “bring it” bravado of a few adrenaline addicts like me. This race was something different—something uniquely insane. It wasn’t about speed. It wasn’t about PRs. It wasn’t about the trend, recently described with typical slowtwich eloquence, of “pussified pancake courses” designed to make triathlon as easy as possible. If Savageman were about anything other than the triumph found

 • Comments: Every year for the last few years I've resolved to do something stupid to commemorate my birthday. Last year it was Six Gap. This year I looked around and hey..I heard talk about this "Savageman" race that was supposed to have the toughest course ever for a half ironman. That sounded like just the sort of masochistic foolishness I was after. For the curious, take a look at www.savagemantri.org: Wet suit swim in a rapidly cooling lake in fall. Bike course with 6,000 feet of climbing and the 25% grade Westernport Wall (videos of people falling over are on the web site...). Run course up and down rocky, boulder strewn trails. Even better, I had a work conference in Baltimore that would pay for my travel. I signed up. I arrived the night before the race to hear the mandatory pre-race briefing. The park and surroundings were gorgeous. The race director told us that the morning weather forecast called for a clear day...and 37 degree air temps at the start. I started to wonder
