  • Comments: In spite of all of the logistical headaches, having to drop your bike off the day before the race and 50 miles away, not being able to set up T2, etc., it turned out to be a fun race. The course was really good, spectators and volunteers were great, aid stations were well-stocked and plentiful. From what I hear, this year was better than last year, so next year might be even better. They need to work out a better system for retrieving your gear bags at the finish line, since that was a nightmare. In general, I'd recommend this race as a first 70.3.

  • Comments: I was hoping for sub 6 hours but I am happy with my time for my first HIM. I do not think this was an easy course either the volunteers were awesome. I can take this as a learning experience and use it to help me in future races. I enjoyed the distance but it is a big time committment training wise and I have to be thankful that I have a wife who tolerates my long training days. Thanks to Bobby (dreamchaser) for your advice this weekend and glad the families got to hang out a little bit.

  • Comments: mini lenders bagels and chips do not qualify as good post race food. Despite all the issues yesterday, Im 100% proud of myself for plugging along and not quitting. Just got back from our LBS to get the bike checked. My frame is cracked!!!!!!! The front derailleur wasn't put on properly which caused some wiggling and vibrations which (according to the bike tech) resulted in a small crack in my frame. They're putting a call in to the QR guy to see what they can do...

  • Comments: This was a well organized race given the challenging point-to-point logistics. The aid stations are top notch and the course is really good - challenging, but totally doable. I set a 26-minute PR over my HIM in New Orleans a few months ago so I couldn't be happier.

  • Comments: Once in a lifetime event. And by that I mean, once in my life time doing a 70.3 or Ironman event. I truly enjoyed it and I'm glad I did it. I conquered the distance. But, I just have no desire to do another event of this length. The sacrifice to my family was worth it - this time. But the sacrifice for more training, to me, isn't worth it. I put in the time to train, I raced the distance, and in the end - I now know I'd rather do shorter races and spend more time with my family. But I had to race this distance to know this for myself. Truly a day that will live with me forever.

  • Comments: I rate the actual race a 3 since the swim course was good, the bike course was good to poor and the run course was OK since the double out and back aspect made it boring. Everything else, from the late Athlete Guide that was not clear and had internal inconsistencies, the point to point nature and the hassles of doing so with 1700+ people, beach traffic, 25 minute delay in starting, leaving my bike outside overnight in the rain, nowhere to change and get cleaned up after (usually I would go for a swim at least, but the beach was now 56 miles away) to the late arrival of the wetsuit bags to finish which required waiting around for an extra couple hours, this part gets a 1. I'll never do this race again. The five hour drive to Musselman would have been less annoying and the cost with a hotel in NY would have been about the same. If I didn't have Danielle to drop me off in the morning and pick me up after the finish it would have been twice as bad.

  • Comments: Excellent race. Great volunteers!!!! Spectators were very supportive and the police on the course were great. Check-in was easy and the expo was nice. Could have had more athlete breifings as I missed it due to the tight schedule on Saturday (hit beach traffic dropping off bike). Everyone involved with this race were spectacular!!!!

  • Comments: This was a poor race for me. I had aimed to break the 6-hour mark, which would have been huge psychologically. And then when it looked like I might make 5:45, I was feeling awesome. Then I crashed, and now the race is bittersweet. I finished, which is always good. I did reasonably well in the swim. I got creamed on the bike and run. I'm still wondering if I would have finished stronger with a different nutrition plan. Perhaps relying on Perpetuem and then gels was unwise. I want a re-match with this distance. As for the race itself: no swag except for a lip balm, few exhibitors at the Expo, and just cookies, bagels, oranges and bananas at the finish. I was too slow for the pizza. But I did notice the VIP booth, which you literally passed on the way to the normal athlete finishing area, was full of tasty treats including shish kebabs. No finisher's shirt. I would not do this race again. It's been 3 years since I ran an IM-branded race. This one was definitely not the

  • Comments: Honestly, they basically shut down half of the state for us. I saw one guy yelling a cop, who just laughed and told him he had to wait and the residents had all be notified. AWESOME volunteers. Could not have asked for anything more from them. Plenty to eat/drink at each aid station. Good hand offs. The residents we passed especially on the bike were awesome cheering everyone on. Outside of the HUGE hassles for checking stuff in ahead of time, the race itself is great. http://ironman.com/events/ironman70.3/rhodeisland70.3?show=tracker http://ironman.com/events/ironman70.3/rhodeisland70.3/?show=raceres...

  • Comments: Overall they did a great job planning and organizing this event. I think they can make some improvements, like working a new bike route into the Capitol, but generally I enjoyed the race. Downtown Providence was great...spent a few bucks at the Brewery and really enjoyed the Renaissance Providence hotel, literally overlooking the finish line...gotta love walking across the street to T2 and the finish festivities, plus being a short stroll from the restaurants and convention center. T2 was a nice grassy area on the Capitol grounds. There was also a lot of "festivities" happening this weekend and particularly Sat night in and around town, which made for a fun time for my friends and family while I was back at the hotel trying to get some sleep before waking up before the butt crack of dawn. The event was well organized although logistically a bit difficult to prep for having to rack your bike 45min away from town on Sat. Not sure why they decided to start the race at 6am...that made it

  • Comments: First year race so you have to expect some glitches, but the logistics of a point to point 70.3 makes at least 112 miles of driving the day before and sort of ruins any advantage for staying at the host hotel. But the 90 min check in, the directions to the beach, and the crappy road conditions were pretty bad. The hill was evil but does give charater to the course. But they were on time and race morning went pretty smooth. Should improve with age, but I probably won't do it again for a few year at least.

  • Comments: The Ironman team put on an amazingly well-run, well-organized event. It was definitley worth the price of admission. The hundreds of volunteers were also amazing and extremely supportive. The back-drop of Providence and the State Capitol building was breathtaking. This is a challening but rewarding course. I will be back next year, and I will be prepared this time.

  • Comments: The athlete check in/bike check in was a logistical nightmare. Waited in line for over 2 hrs. They needed an efficient system for checking in athletes. The actual race was much better organized than I was expecting given the ordeal on Sat. I was happily surprised. Not a lot of post race food though. Cheeseless pizza and pasta salad was all I saw.

  • Comments: This is my first HIM and first race longer than a Sprint. I will volunteer for it next year while I am healing but may get in on the 2010 one. I think Rhode Island did a decent job pulling off an inaugural race and would recommend it to others.
