  • Comments: What an AWESOME experience. I couldnt have done it without the fantastic support of my wife not only on Race Day and Race Week, but throughout the entire year. She truly is and IRON SHERPA!!! She was out on the course (or tracking my progress online) all day cheering me on every time I passed through town. During the year, in addition to her job, she took care of our family and household while I worked 50-60 hrs/wk and then trained 8-12 hrs/wk. I loved every minute out on the course. I was expecting to have feelings of doubt and uncertainty at some point during the day, but when the cannon went off on July 20, 2008 at 7:00am in Lake Placid, I knew that on that day I would become an Iron Man.

  • Comments: Some of my favorite memories from the race are seeing Dante and mile 14 and getting to stop and hug him and when I got out of the swim some tall man putting his hands on my shoulders to move me out of the way. I don’t know why that sticks with me but I guess most people in the race would just push me out of the way but he was kind and gentle and it made me feel somewhat protected for just that one second. I know weird but whatever. My real favorite memories came from spending the week with our tri group in our rented house. I have never laughed so much in my life, especially after the race, when we were all sharing our stories. LP was such a great experience because we did it with friends and the race was more about that than anything else.

  • Comments: What a great venue in a beautiful area. I enjoyed my time and my experience there and look forward to signing up and doing it again in a few years (long range thought is to go back and volunteer next year to sign up for the '10 race). I cannot thank Mir and the boys enough for being there to support me, for my mother-in-law for volunteering on such short notice to be in the medical tent helping out, to Andrew and his family for sharing their place with us (and HUGE kudos to him for having a fantastic race and getting 2nd in the Clydesdale class taking home some nice prizes and a plaque!!), to Johnnykay from BT for standing in line to get me the chance to do the race in the first place last year (I still owe you that beer my friend), to Sue again for her swim coaching, to Paul at the shop for allowing me to blow all my money buying goodies for the bikes and for all my friends and family for their continued support of this crazy lifestyle!

  • Comments: It was a great race - even with the adverse weather conditions. The volunteers were so supportive and the spectators were fantastic. The town and surrounding areas are beautiful. It's not hard to understand why people come back to do this race over and over again.

  • Comments: This journey has changed my life. I have always been a late bloomer. Now I know that the Powers that Be had a plan for me. There is so much that I want to do in my lifetime. Most importantly, I want to give back into the world so much of what has been given to me. I am in the process of exploring where those energies will be directed. Also, my triathlete son and I will both be competing at IMLP 2009! How cool is that? And my oldest son will be competing at the NYC Marathon this fall (his second marathon). My daughter runs and swims (water polo team this fall)and is an accomplished equestrian. My husband maintains his fitness and my DIL runs and does yoga. We are all embracing a healthy life style and I could not be happier. Given the circumstances, this year's race became all about finishing an IronMan. Next year it will be about finishing and hopefully being more competitive. Thanks to all of you for your support and guidance!

  • Comments: Am I signed up for next year? Nope. Would I do it again? Yup, someday. It was an amazing day. M-dot is truly different than all the rest. But having a job and training for an Ironman doesn't leave room for much else. My wife has put her goals on hold for some time and now its my turn to do support. Thank you to everyone who has helped me in my journey. You know who you are. Congratulations to all you new Iron-people and all my best to those signed up again. Like Rick says, if you do the work, execute it properly and are lucky, you get what you deserve. I also can't help throwing in a even better quote to live and train by "In all things, God works for the good of those who love him".

  • Comments: 1) would have been a gorgeous course on a sunny day (much of it along fast flowing streams/rivers) with great trees along the way, 2) great organized race with incredible volunteers who did not bail on their volunteer duties even with the cool wet conditions, 3) I had 4 goals for the race in decending priority order: a) not get hurt, b) finish the race, c) have fun, and d) be happy with my time. Given my back and the wet conditions, I purposely decided to sacrifice the fourth goal for the first two. At points on the run, I was having fun talking to others, but most of the race (it rained 14 hours of the 15.5 hours I was on the course) was unfortunately not fun. Bottomline, given the conditions, I was happy I accomplished my first 2 goals! All the thanks to GOD for that!!!

  • Comments: Great race, great venue, fantastic volunteers and crowd support, town is very positive and supportive of the athletes. Being a small town in an area with mountains makes logistics difficult on race day if you don't stay in town which is often wicked expensive. I will do this race again for sure...I'm not sure when maybe '10. I will do another Ironman no doubt about it. Challenging distance and I do love to ride long and the training is fun most of the time. The Ironman lifestyle agrees with me. I hope next IM I will continue to grow and learn and much of the fear I had will be gone so the journey will be different and I will learn more about myself and what I am made of.

  • Comments: Volunteers and spectators. I cannot say enough. While we were all racing and the day seemed to fly by, there folks sat out there in the cold, pouring rain to make my/our day bearable! They are the real rock stars! Thank you! Lastly, I got my picture taken with 2 more superstars of the sport, Heather Fuhr and Paula newby Fraser. I will post them as soon as i get them from Beth.

  • Comments: Wow, the volunteers, amazing. The town/crowd support, amazing. I made sure to slap every person and kids hand that got stuck out out while on the run course, and to say thank you to every person that I could pick out that was cheering for me or giving me encouraging words out there. Eventually it turned into I could only mouth thank you when I didnt feel well, but hopefully they saw the effort. I was quite overwhelmed by all the positive people out there! The athletes were great to when you would run into one going about your speed. While it is a big race, I still felt very taken care of and it still felt personal to me. I dont know if other MDot IM's are the same, but LP was great!

  • Comments: This is Ironman! They have this gig figured out! It is not cheap, but they have a product that is in demand and people are willing to pay for. I want to use this space to thank some people that helped me out tremendously on this journey! First, of course, my wife Connie! Besides providing encouragement and support through out all of the training, coming and getting me where ever I was when I had bike issues, she was out in the rain Sunday when ever I came through town cheering me on. Not to mention by the time I was finished, she already had my bike and transition bags back at the hotel so I didn't need to worry about that. I also want to thank Dudley (dexter) again! Your help the last year swimming helped me get through the swim exceeding my goals! Plus you and Mike (marmadaddy) keeping me company on some of the long rides the last couple of months! Connie always felt better knowing I was not riding alone! Also, the rest of the local BT crew for your inspires and advice!

  • Comments: I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my wife and kids, without whose support and belief in my abilities, none of this would have been possible. On a day, that was the ultimate in miserable, they were always there for me when I came through town. I saw the pile of wet clothes on the floor when I got back to the room. They, like me, were unprepared for the weather. No rain gear, no umbrellas. They did manage to score some garbage bags from the cleaning staff, in an attempt to stay dry, but what they went through, that’s true support and they are Iron Spectators. Also a big thanks to all the volunteers. Again to stand out there in that weather for hours on end is unbelievable. I didn’t see any “woe is me”, they were always supportive. And finally to all the spectators, I saw people all over the course all day long, and to sit through that weather was truly inspiring to me.

  • Comments: IMLP is a great race. I do think though that the swim is nuts and somebody will die or get really injured one of these days. My coach who is an amazing swimmer( under 1h swim) dnf this race because of concusion in the swim. 3 elbow hits to the end. It doesn't seem like swimmers we're who we're in the front we're seeding themselves correctly and it made more congestion. Maybe a start like kentucky would be better( spacing of 1sec between athletes) Overall good event, my second time was as sweet.Improved my time by 27mins from last year and even though wasn't under 14 , i was satisfied with my time considering conditions.

  • Comments: NAS can do a better job w/ things like registration and directions after the race (I wasn't directed to the finisher's photo area). But the venue, spectators and volunteers can't be beat. With the new voucher system for particpants, NAS has made a return trip in 2009 very appealing. As with all distances, the experience gained here was invaluable. If I return in 09 I'm confident I can perform even better. And I'll be the on the young end of the 45-49 AG :)

  • Comments: The volunteers and spectators were just AWESOME!! These people voluntarily stood out in the rain all day and were just so kind and motivating. When it comes to atmosphere and amenities on the course, I don't think you can beat an IM event. It's just a wonderful experience and well worth the money.

  • Comments: The volunteers stayed out in the rain for 17 hours to help. What more can I say? Without them it would have been miserable. This race was first-class all the way. From the big screen closed captioning at the start, the helicopter flying overhead, music pumping at aid stations, even a "prayer station rest stop", the inspiration station..... it was awesome. I can't thank everyone eough!

  • Comments: Anyone who thinks that a full IM in the pouring rain would not be fun, great, wonderful, and AWESOME was probably not at this race. The fans were STILL all out there and it was truly amazing. I absolutely loved my first Ironman - every rain drop of it!
