  • Comments: I'm of the mind that people primarily want to read race reports to figure out if they want to attend said race. To that end, I'm dividing this one up into sections, each progressively less relevant to that purpose and progressively more about me. Logistics and Race Support As with any M-dot branded race, signup was pretty straightforward, if one is well ahead of the curve. I don't know when this race sold out, but it did. Being proactive, perhaps as much as a year in advance, would certainly get one in easily. My wife got interested 6 months from the race, and wound up signing up for a Carmichael Training camp which came with a race signup so she could join me in Oceanside for her first 70.3. We drove to this race from Tucson, so I can't comment on air travel/car rentals. I rented a Zipp 808 Firecrest/Disc combo from Race Day Wheels. I'd hoped to get them sent to me at home before the race, but there was some confusion about shipping, mostly generated by me. They put them

  • Comments: I really like this race(which is great since it's close to home). The swim is mostly protected, but gets a few (or in this case more than a few) swells to keep it interesting. The bike course is scenic and challenging, and the beach atmosphere of the run course is fun. The volunteers including many Marines are great and the race is well organized. I felt the change to a two transition system was well communicated and went pretty well (alhtough it made the course less than optimal). I definitely plan to be back for a fourth time next year.

  • Comments: The race cost $300 and I can see the value. Anything more and I personally can't see paying that much. There are local half distance races that are not the 'I' brand, which I suppose are just as fulfilling. Aside from that, I'll still do this race next year. Volunteer support is excellent. Organizers do a lot to make the race run well. Aid stations are well stocked. Drafting is going to happen. Sometimes they will get caught, sometimes they won't. I will not purposely draft but will call out those in my age division who do. I still beat the one guy in my division who I saw blatantly drafting.

  • Comments: I love this race!!! The venue is awesome, the course is challenging but scenic and fun, and as with all WTC races, the volunteers are incredible, they are everywhere, and the spectators are very motivating. I will be back next year to finish even faster! All in all, I have had two (2) great races in a row now. IM Arizona was a great experience, and this race I prepared for even better, and it really showed in my results and my physical status after the race. Needless to say, this HIM was a BIG PR for me - 5:45:18 is 26 minutes better than my previous PR for this distance.

  • Comments: I love this venue but I don't know if I can do such an early season race again with my current schedule. Perhaps I'll volunteer next year. I will be back in the fufure.

  • Comments: I'm really happy with my performance. 4:30 was my goal and that's what I got. As always, there's room for improvement on my swim, but I am making great progress. Thanks to BlueSeventy for making a neoprene cap that is comfortable to wear and for their Helix fullsuit which gave me extra confidence in my swim knowing that everything about the suit is designed to bring out my awesome. Despite having to alter my plan during the bike, I was able to go beyond what I thought I could. Huge thanks here to Easton for a killer wheelset, Challenge for the tires that kept me safe and fast on wet roads, and Speedfil for the A2 so there was so possible way I could lose ALL of my nutrition. Thanks also goes out to Fuel Belt for the Gel Flask which I had in a holster on my frame. Good thing I loaded it with an extra gel! For the run I need to thank my teammates. It was a huge motivator to see you guys rocking your kits on the course. I've seen other teams be able to high five and shout out during

  • Comments: I thought the race was really well put together. This was my first Ironman branded race and it pretty exciting to do. I think if I did the race again, I would be able to prepare a lot better. Also, I would mentally be more in focus on what to expect next and overcome some obstacles. I was really happy for a lot of my friends who had a great race. Man I have some speedy friends.

  • Comments: I think the course changes made the event more viewer friendly without impacting the race too much. The run was definitely harder with the additional ups/downs to the Strand. I would like to see them remove the bike portion on the Strand and just have us ride down Pacific. The north section of the course was crowded with runners going both N & S, and bikes going S.

  • Comments: Very challenging, yet totally fun race. If you're going to register, hit the hills early and often on both the bike and run.

  • Comments: #1- I want to thank my beautiful girlfriend, Josie. She has been so supportive of my training and race goals. I even have her doing races. I am lucky to have her. #2- thanks to my coach Tawnee Prazak for believing in me and being a great coach. #3- thanks to ChrisM, one year ago he was a big inspiration for a dream come true. Thanks Chris and nice meeting you at the race. I trained and worked hard for this race. I am the firm believer you can do whatever you want. I dreamed big and come through big. I am very happy and blessed. I just hope to continue this journey for years to come. Next stop, WILDFLOWER in 5 weeks!!!!! (2 sprint races in between!!)
