  • Comments: As always, the organizers and vols are terrific. The weather was magical, cool and sunny on the bike, slight overcast on the run. I would have loved a beach start. Maybe next year.

  • Overall course based on my ability:

  • Comments: This is a California classic. The bike course, which you can really only do during a race unless you're military, is legit and IMO one of the best I've done. Marines are always superb volunteers as well. Even though I say every year "it's too early," I'm always tempted to sign up again.

  • Comments: Here are the results. The vols were especially great this year, and there were a lot of them. There were a ton of young Marines in vol shirts on the run, at sign-in and elsewhere, and it was flattering to keep getting called, Sir, by so many young superstars.

  • Comments: This was a great race! The bike course on Pendleton was challenging but scenic. The run was very scenic and the crowd was great. Definitely one of the best finish lines in the 70.3 circuit. Check out my full review here: http://transitionsfromwar.com/ironman-70-3-california-review/

  • Comments: I have done this race 5 times in the decade I've been doing tris, it was my first half, and after this race I wonder why I haven't done it 10 times. It is such an awesome course and race, and while not in my back yard close enough. This was my first half ironman back in 2007, and my tenth or eleventh half ironman and have to say the most satisfying I think. Everyone has obstacles, and everyone has stories of overcoming setbacks (and some have multiple stories :) ) but even though it wasn't my fastest or a PR, finishing felt like a huge win for me. My friend Jeff Matlow has a saying, "it's not about your time to get from the start to the finish, but about the time you had in between," and I had a great time.

  • Comments: Here are the results. WTC always does a good job. The course is well managed. The vols are excellent and well directed. The expo is fun. "Mandatory" bike check in sort of made sense because a ton of athletes will ride in the dark without lights race morning. Since I have light brackets on the TT bike, I grated my teeth at having to take an extra, unnecessary trip to transition. The downsides are that Oceanside is feeling more crowded on all three legs. The swim felt more crowded than ever, probably because faster waves have been moved back. Also, yet again, they had rubber tacos. If the college tris can get pizza, so can WTC.

  • Comments: Oceanside is a very well organized event with awesome volunteers. And to have the support of the men and women from Camp Pendleton is amazing. Beach, sun, blue skies palm trees...such a great place to have a HIM!

  • Comments: The bike course is pretty desolate but that is typical going through the base. The run course had great spectator and volunteer support. This is just a good local race, lots of friends and a great overall feel.

  • Comments: Camp Pendleton had tons of military personnel that volunteered. However, actual race venue had little or no course volunteers and those that were wearing the shirts did not know simple items such as where to go to athlete check-in, where the swim leg starts, were to turn on run, etc..

  • Comments: The kids volunteering could announce what they have in the glasses they are handing out more. On most of the run stations I had to ask what was in the cups. I'm not bagging on them, they were awesome in that they volunteered and it didn't kill me to ask what was in the cups, but it would've saved me 3 calories of breath expenditure on my run. HAHA

  • Comments: Oceanside was my first 70.3 and I have to say that it will be the MOST memorable race that I have ever run. I sacrificed and trained since November for this race. I was lucky enough to be able to race it with Roland. I was blessed enough to have my 7 month pregnant wife and best friends to come cheer me on all day. I had the Tri-Rookies in my corner. When I was crossing the finish line I couldn't help but think how lucky I was. And, although I was hoping for a sub 7 hour race, to my astonishment I went sub 6!

  • Comments: All in all this was a good race for me. Best I've done in a half and I finally feel like I can race this distance successfully. That's a huge confidence boost. Talking things over with my coach, he thinks I'll be much much faster by the end of the year. I would have to confidently agree with that. Next up is Wildflower and I'm excited to toe the line again. No Vegas slot obviously as I didn't even go to the awards for the roll down. This performance was not worthy of a Vegas slot and I don't want to earn it that way...I want to qualify straight up. Next shot for that will be Boise 70.3. Now all the thanks. First, sponsors: Wattie Ink, K Swiss, Power Bar, blueseventy, Scott Bikes, Reynolds Wheels, Kask Helmets, ISM Saddles. Corporate Sponsors 101 Pipe & Casing / Kurt Orban Partners / Wins Wheels. I'd like to say thank you to every single person who chanted/screamed/yelled my name and anything remotely encouraging on the run. It helped so much you have no idea (even fellow racers).

  • Comments: Ton of volunteers, aid stations were loaded with people. The run course was crowded in some areas. I wanted a big event for my first HIM and was very happy that I picked Oceanside. It was run great, lots of cheering, and was overall a great experience. Also love the Ironkids run the day before. My 8 and 5 year old daughters did it and they are sooo proud of their medals.

  • Comments: Last year I did 5:53. I was fully prepared to go 5:30-540 ish. I thought for sure I could go 5:40's. I felt good after swim and bike. Then my back seized up and I was not able to give a good effort in the run. I usally do very well in the run. Even though I couldnt run, i still finished 6:11. Not a horrible time but I will be prepared when i come back in 2014, i will promise that. It was a challenge to finish because I was in some pain. I am happy that I finished. Now to start mentally and physically preparing for Wildflower, Vineman, and Arizona IM. Big 2013 for me. A HUGE thanks to all the volunteers. Thank you!

  • Comments: This really is an excellent race, and I finally feel like I was able to "race" it. Not competetively, as I am miles from the podium, but to feel as if I am in the hunt nevertheless. I know I can do more on the run, and look forward to seeing what may come of that.

  • Comments: Way stoked at my result. I was worried about finishing within 8:30, so crushed my time. Getting excited for Tahoe. I was a little disappointed with the swag (shirt, hat, bag) compared to that I've seen at other races. The run could have used one more water stop at the far end. Overall, the support was amazing. I loved seeing my family and Ironteam coaches & friends along the way. And when I finished I realized that Heather had been posting as me to facebook all day, so I got to feel the immediate love from around the world. I'm also happy that I finally got my fundraising up and running. Adventures & curing cancer, a great mix: http://pages.teamintraining.org/sf/irnmnltt13/conor
