  • Comments: Since this was the last year of IM St. Croix 70.3, I think the financial budget was slim and it was obvious. At packet pickup, your running bib (which was a simple bib number and didn't have your name on it like at other IM races) was in a plastic bag. No backpacks were given out as swag. You did get a white T-shirt with IM ST. Croix on the front of it. There was a small room for bike mechanic (thank goodness because my front brake cable got snapped en route (TSA completely unpacked my bike box when we were flying out of mainland US and didn't repack properly). In the room adjacent to the bike mechanic was the "merchandise." There were CO2 cartridges, cliff bars and 4-5 tank tops with St. Croix on them. That's it. No other merchandise for sale. I had hoped to get the finisher shirt with the participants names on the back. There was none of the gear that you can usually buy at an IM race. The post race festivities were being taken down by the time I finished which is ok as well.

  • Comments: I told my coach I think the bike course is tough but not awful. You did have to be on mentally the whole time due to the conditions. This race really starts on the run. The cumulative effect of the bike with hills, heat, humidity, wind, rough roads shows up on this really challenging run course. I swore while I was doing the "run" I would not do this race again....of course, time has passed and I believe I will be back :)

  • Comments: Incredible experience, very challenging and hot course. Most people participating where hard core age groupers. It was great to be able to finish with an OK time. Would like to do this again on a sunny day to experience the full beauty of this course.

  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: very well organised, good support on course especially the run aid stations. I trained on small hills in temperate climate often on ice so perhaps expected too much of myself.

  • Comments: Tough ass race. All the studs show up, too. The beast is the real deal. I could go back.

  • Comments: St. Croix HIM is one that you will never forget! I don't care if you win the race or are the last finisher. It's very well run, hard and falls into the category of an Epic Race. The only downside to doing this race is that people stop listening to you after 30 min and you haven't even gotten to the Beast portion of the bike yet. Oh, at the Awards ceremony, we happenned to be where the pro's were hanging out. So I got a picture with Faris, Craig, the Lovato's, Richie Cunningham and some others. Amanda remembered me from the bike course. But then again...who wouldn't? :P I found it funny that Mike L. was carrying her purse!

  • Comments: In summary, St. Croix was an awesome race. If you're looking for a lot of bling and swag, then it's definitely not for you, however if you're looking for a course that will challenge you and push you to limits you've never been to before, then I can't think of a better race. The scenery is beautiful, and the people are awesome. There's a bonding that happens in St. Croix that hasn't happened in previous races. I'm not sure if it's because it's approximately 1/4 the size, or if it's because the island is small, but it's an amazing feeling. And now, for the rest of my life I'll be able to say, I climbed the Beast!

  • Comments: Fans often lined the course and the entire island was shut down so the race could happen. The whole course was very, very tough. Everone talks about the Beast, but it's the rolling hills and heat after the Beast that really take the toll. Add to that, very rough pavement throughout and the entire bike and run should be known as the Beast.
