  • Comments: I really enjoyed myself at this race despite how difficult it felt along with the barely enough training. The volunteers were great and the on course nutrition support was excellent! I plan on racing it again next year! First HIM (70.3) race ever complete! Woot!!! ^_^

  • Comments: I'm 0 for 2 at Orangeman ... and I'm not one to complain ... but this is largely due to course set up. The bike is phenomenal and I appreciate the chance to ride Ortega. But last year the run was 14 miles and this year the soft sand??? This still has the potential to be a GREAT H.I.M. and I will always support this local race. Maybe just growing pains. Hope they get it all together next year.

  • Comments: The penalty didn't technically cost me a spot, as even without it I was still about :15 seconds back from second place. But maybe not getting it would have kept me motivated to try harder. Tough to say, but I don't think I would have done much better. Nice low key race. Only about 400 finishers. Riding on a closed Ortega Hwy is fantastic. Sand run and heat sucked, but everyone had to deal with this. Disappointed that the run fell apart so badly. My slowest HIM run ever, including 2 insanely hard Wildflower runs. Same thing happened last year at Santa Barbara Long, which was also hot. Maybe I just can't do Oceanside in March and still put together a good long course race in September. Or maybe I wasn't as comfortable on the bike as I thought and I pushed too hard. Feel pretty beat up after this race, more than any 70.3 I can recall. Lots of folks saying the same. But glad I did it and would do it again

  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: It was a good race but too hard for my first HIM. Adding the extra mile was brutal. Overall, I think they did an excellent job given that it was the first race. I will do it again in the future if it is around for a while. Not sure if I will do it next year or the year after. I think I would rather do Vineman than this and I don't think I can swing both next year.

  • Comments: My coach sent me an email back and told me that he rather me have tough races like this than one that was easy because it would cause me to learn from the mistakes and take IMAZ a lot more seriously. Well, I didn't think it would be possible to take IMAZ more seriously, but I am. I've never really experience low points in a race like I did in this one, but I am glad I did because I'm sure it's going to happen in November. My friends ask me all the time why I spend so much time, energy and money on triathlons; ironically, I asked myself that same exact question while I was on the run. I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to 2 things. It's the same motivation I approach playing ball, I just want to win and improve on my abilities while trying to enjoy the process. Although I didn't enjoy it too much today, I did learn a lot about myself as a triathlete... and that is I need to HTFU.

  • Comments: The RD did a terrific job. No race is perfect, but this one was certainly well organized, clearly marked, lots of well-trained volunteers, nice tech shirt, enough porta' potties, Pizza and Lasagna at the end, etc. The weather cooperated too, and everything went off beautifully. He even sprung for a live band at the small pre-race festival in a great park. How he managed to close off Ortega Hwy- I don't know, but it was truly a great ride. The extra 1.1mi on the run- WTF?

  • Comments: Inaugural race distance. I will do this event again next year, and train more for the hills by riding Baldy or GMR and running Claremont at least once a week. Going to join Tri Connection
