  • Comments: this could have easily been a PR race for me, just by elimating the waste in transitions I could have PR'd and if I pushed a little more on bike/run, I think I had a more in me, but that wasn't for today. Overall, I got out of today what I wanted, IM fitness check and learn from a race day what to tweek in the plan. Main take away is to have a race plan and review it over and over. I did this well last year and it really helped, so I know what the benefit is now.

  • Comments: Beat PR by 50 minutes. Beat goal time (5:14 on 5/14) by almost 7 minutes. Traveled with and shared room with Patrick Pannett. 4:14:00 in zone 3. low hr 96; ave hr 145; high heartrate 174; 5,453 calories The volunteers all had information and were available. The course is extremely well marked -- from the water to mile markers to turns. I didn't see aid stations running out of supplies. Would have liked to see drinks other than water on the bike course. Not a big deal.

  • Comments: This is by far my lowest ranking in any race I have ever done. Well no, I did DNF my first HIM attempt (freaked out in the swim). My HIM PR is 5:39 and I'm typically right around 6 hours so I'm a good hour slow and I'm a long ways from IM fitness. I turn 50 this year. I decided last year that to celebrate the 50th year of my life I would do 3 things? 1. Run my first 100 miler 2. Run another Boston Qualifying marathon 3. Complete another Ironman Goal number 1 was accomplished at the Umstead 100. The problem is that I enjoyed that so much that I'm finding that I don't have a lot of interest in continuing on with goals 2&3. I really want to just do trail running and ultras. The plan currently is to stick with my original plan for 2011 and then let that fitness cary me into a spring 2012 100. I just have to keep telling myself that I'm doing 100 mile training, just taking a different approach to my training this time. I do have to admit that training for and completing a 100 mile

  • Comments: Very well run race. I will probably email the race director about the bike peletons though. It is aggravating to see so many people flouting the rules when I was trying to obey them.
