Member Question

I am a new age-grouper (39) and did my first triathlon (olympic) in the Austin triathlon. The swim training I am doing is very hard since I cannot figure my breathing issue. I have 10 lessons with a coach and he keeps telling my I'm holding my breath. I cannot figure out where since I'm breathing out and in every 3rd stroke.  Any drill recommendations for improving breathing or finding out where I am holding my breath?

Answer

Breathing can be difficult to get right away and is usually the last thing I work on with beginners.

Great job breathing every third stroke though, as this is ideal in freestyle- especially for open water swimming. However, you may consider falling back to breathing every 2 or 4 strokes on your stronger side until you can get the timing part down on breathing. [.....]
