  • Comments: Great race. The only downside to it is having to deal with the DC traffic and parking. But even that was not a bad as thought it was going to be. The race folks did a good job of informing everyone about the parking and traffic situation.

  • Comments: This was my first triathlon since doing the DC Triathlon a year ago. That was a terrible race for me since my training was weak, and my weight was up significantly from 2009, and I didn't repect the Olympic distance, because I had already "been there, done that". In fact, I put back on 50 of the 60 pounds I took off in 2009. I basically imploded in 2010. I somehow managed to do two 10 milers and a half marathon, but in the 12+ minute range, mostly due to weight. Finally, on April 1st, decided to get my act together and seriously focus on training and weight loss. Recognizing my lack of preparation, I felt I should drop down to the Sprint, but ego, rapid weight loss, and dramatic recovery of my running kept me wanting to do the Olympic. By race day, I had dropped about 35 pounds (20 pounds from the same race last year), and improved my average running pace from 12:30 to 10:30. I felt confident I could beat my time from 2010. I had no idea that I would be able to swim as well, or

  • Comments: Logistics are hard. Packet pick up one place, bike racking another place, no parking. Finish line two miles from transition. Walked the two miles.

  • Comments: Olympic + sprint had 3,500 participants. I would not come back in later summer for the Nation's Tri where I've heard there can be 6,000. Not worth the aggravation of a congested course. It is logistically challenging because start and finish are in 2 different locations. Had to take shuttle from finish to transition and bike several miles back to car. Also, rack bikes on Saturday.

  • Comments: Overall very impressed with the organization of this race. Most things were done very well, and given the complexity of putting on an event like this in the middle of Washington DC, it worked out surprisingly well. My main concern with the race was that the timing of the Oly and Sprint races meant that the 2nd lap of the bike course was rather congested, with riders of very different speeds, and this made it tricky on some of the narrower stretches. They probably have to do that in order to shorten the road closures. The one other thing that might keep me back from making this a race that I'd put on my list of must-do events is that late June in DC is not known for its tri-friendly weather. That is, unless you are built for heat and high humidity (not me!). We were lucky that the day was merely very humid, and not too hot, but one couldn't count on that every year.

  • Comments: Such a well organized event considering its size. The potholes were the worst part and there's nothing the organizers can do about that.
