  • Comments: Derby is fun. The highlight is running through Churchhill Downs. The course is kinda average after that.

  • Comments: Good race. I much prefer this "new" route to the 2010 route. Most of the race was scenic. Downtown, UofL campus, Old Louisville, Churchill Downs, and the Highlands were all enjoyable with interesting architecture and landscaping. The hilly 3 miles through Iroquois Park are pleant in spring. A couple of small patches of the route were run down, but not much. Crowd support was good, especially at the start, finish and through UofL.

  • Comments: There was major changes to the course this year (announced several months ago) which was controversial to some, and I too had my issues with changing such a well loved course by the runners and the community. But I will say that I can see why the changes were made, and looking back, I am fine with it at this point. I will also say that I feel like this was the best organization I have experienced at this event (even with some last minute course changes due to the regional flooding going on, in addition to the previously mentioned major course changes) I did not have to weave at all for the beginning miles to get around walkers, which is a MAJOR improvement from previous years. I could literally go my preferred pace and was right in step with others from my corral. I can really see this race continuing to grow in the years ahead. Well, at least the mini-marathon (currently at 15,000 participants for the mini). The full marathon is pretty challenging with all the hills; not 'flat and fast'

  • Comments: Pretty good race overall. I didn't like that the pacers were hard to find. I think I only saw the 4:10 pacer on the course, but only because she was leaving Cherokee Park as I was coming in and was crossing the bridge from IN to KY as I was going the other way. The water stations had plastic water bottles or cups, which I thought was a little dangerous when people would just throw them on the ground. Paper cups would have been better, though I did like having the option of grabbing a water bottle to take with me as I ran in case I needed to drink before I got to the next station. I think the hills beat me pretty badly, but I'm not that sore 2 days after the race (and this is my first marathon; I thought I'd be sore for a week) so I'm wondering if the hardness of the course was more in my head than physical. So I'm rating it "just right" since I like a challenge, and apparently just running 26.2 on a flat course isn't enough of a challenge for me ;-) One criticism. . . at

  • Comments: In all honestly, I wasn't properly trained for this distance. It was a risky endeavor considering all that I have on my race schedule for this season. In the end, I came out better for it as I now KNOW that it is a distance to be respected. I have much more work to do and aside from my angry toes, my body is recovering nicely.

  • Comments: The race was excellent. I got to the Expo late on Friday night and a lot of it had been shut down, but it was a nice convention center, there obviously had been quite a few vendors. Race start was very nice in Iroquois Park. My only gripe is the first 5 miles or so are mostly in this park with very narrow 2lane roads with no shoulder. 10000 people is a lot of people running very close together for 5 miles. Once out of the park, it was great. About mile 8, you get to run into Churchill Downs and run a loop around the infield - not on the racetrack itself. There were a lot of horses out for training runs but was a pretty diversion from the running. Miles 9 - 14 are pretty dull going across the city, and then 14-18 are in another park that is nice and hilly. Coming out of the park back to downtown was very genereic, but once you get back to town, you run across the bridge - a mile each way - and back to a finish downtown. Organization was great, plenty of volunteers, good aid stations,
