  • Comments: Well run. Well organized. Plenty of volunteers. Course was well marked. Beer at the finish line. Just get an an enthusiastic announcer (or any announcer for that matter) to make the race feel more like an event. Will do race again.

  • Comments: This race is sort of no frills. But I have no complaints. I like to complain when I feel like promises are not delivered on. The course was safe, the race was organized and well put together. There was ice at the run stations. The medals and shirts were very generic (same for long/short course, same design as last year), but that's not a big deal to me. I'm much happier with the production this year than I was as an observer in 2014 and 2015.

  • Comments: Much improved production over 2014 and back on track from years past. For whatever reason participation was down this year. Perhaps on a related note, from an organizers perspective, the food was lacking. I didn't need cold breakfast burritos from Sonic. I'm fine with bananas and orange slices (milk and yogurt are good too). The PBR during the awards was great though.

  • Comments: This race has been going on for 35 years and as such it is a nicely organized race. The race is traditionally hot and windy (you are in Kansas), but overall still a fun time. The downsides are around the support. There is no bike support and the run support is not consistent. The water stations are sporadic and don't have much to offer (hello, ice would be nice). The finish is great, and this year they added a nice finisher's medal. I loved the free beer at the finish, but really they didn't have much else to offer. They had Sonic breakfast burritos, but that just doesn't sit well with my stomach. No chocolate milk, no bananas, just water, gatorade, burritos and beer.

  • Comments: Very unimpressed this year. Having no announcer makes a huge difference, especially from an event-energy perspective. Plenty of volunteers, and everyone I came across did a great job. They were coordinated appropriately. No awards ceremony, just stood in line to pick it up. Just pizza for food. The race production basics were there, but I feel like this race go the C/D level treatment from Silverback/Ultramax crew (not sure who the "blame" would fall on). I've had a much better experience with this race the previous times I've races it.

  • Comments: Great race. I like the overall feel and atmosphere of it. I also think they do a good job of being accommodative to the first timers that show up for the race. The post race food options were lacking in that there was only pizza and soda, but I never do a race based on what they offer after I finish so not a big deal for me. It sounds like they are trying to convince the powers that be to move this race a week or two later on the calendar to get participation up since this race runs so close to KS 70.3.

  • Comments: I noticed a few new things this year...it seems like they cut some costs. The t-shirt is was just a plain tee. Not a nicer quality tech tee like last year. Also, post race there was no sports drinks: only cans of cola and diet cola and a bunch of pizza. Last year they gave each participant an ice cold sponge as they crossed the finish line. Boy did I miss that! I can't complain too much, all of those things are minor. Just luxuries. The announcer is annoying, but informative. The race is very organized and the bike course folks and the aid stations all seemed to have things under control. This one is going to stick with me for a while and motivate me to improve. One last thing...why is this course always advertised as 7 miles, when it's actually closer to 7.6-8 miles?

  • Comments: The threat of weather made this challenging. This was also my first open water swim, so in some ways I didn't mind having a shortened swim. The heat at the end made for a difficult run.

  • Comments: This was a good race. I was disappointed that the course was shortened but it was done for the athlete's safety in mind. Overall, it was a great experience for a first-time.

  • Comments: Overall a good race. Lots of changes though. 6.5mi run became a 6.9mi run. 3 age groups combined into one(10-24) which left me off the podium even though website and prerace email said 20-24 was its own AG. Despite the changes it was another great Ultramax event.

  • Comments: finished late so all food and other things were gone. transition area's were extremely crowded and sprint and olympic distances were mixed together which caused a lot of confusion with gear and setup. racks kept falling and storm blew bikes off of rack.

  • Comments: A very nice race with lots of volunteers and I think the entire town of Topeka was out to see what was going on. Standard Ultramax first year event glitches though, nothing major and everything was ironed out before the start of the race. I don't think the swim to T1 chute was finalized until 30 minutes before the gun went off. Sometimes the best layout isn't apparent until you physically set it up. It looked like the number of athletes overwhelmed the physical transition space.

  • Comments: Pretty well run race overall, they have made improvements based on past feedback, just doesn't have the carnival atmosphere of some of the larger races but that's what you get with a smaller race.

  • Comments: It is hard to find faults in such a well organized race with such perfect weather. The lake was warm and calm with lots of volunteers. The bike was a nice ride with cops at every turn to direct us. The wind had picked up a little to provide a nice breeze on the scenic run around the lake. It was a good race on a great day.

  • Comments: My first long course. It was tough, but I thought I was well prepared. Was able to complete the entire route without stopping. Feel I could "easily" do a true olympic distance race.

  • Comments: The course and race itself were wonderful! The Race director and timing director I have issues with. My offical time was never recorded and I only recived a time based on my watch, and had to give it to them when I found out they never recored me finishing the race. This was due to a failure in the timing mat. The race director later handed out awards based on unofficial results which I find unprofessional and became the cause of many errors while people were anounced as winners.

  • Comments: Everything about this race was top-notch, except for the timing chip issues, which unfortunately is a huge problem. There were a ton of volunteers and they all did a great job - the course set-up and organization was good, and I had a really fun time overall.

  • Comments: This was a fun event and I'd do it again. The competitors were friendly and fun to 'race' with. My beefs about this race: There was some confusion about closing the transition area to everyone (this didn't effect the long course folks), but it was pretty well put together. If they posted the results at the race site, I never found them. Post-race feed was Domino's Pizza (if there was more, it wasn't there when I finished). For my racing, I'm really happy with the swim and my bike work (against my previous bike results). My run was poor, but it was consistent with my training and how I've performed lately.
