  • Lots of volunteers to help?Yes
  • Plenty of drink stations?No

  • Post race activities? Below average
  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: Poorly organized. They didn't know until the day before that part of their bike trail was unrideable (Conrad Stoltz had to tell them this). Were still setting buoys 30 minutes before race time. Conflicting instructions on which direction to go around the buoys. No pre race meeting. Late start due to cofusion about where to go in the swim. No bodymarked ages on calves. No food or even Gatorade post race. The volunteers were nice.

  • Overall course based on my ability: Just right

  • Comments: The bike was advertised as 11 miles, and came out to be 7.37 miles. With so much mountain to work with, I think they could have routed a better bike course. Only 2 aid stations on the run and the second one ran out of water. This was advertised as being a "beginner friendly" race and a good XTERRA for first timers. I'm a good mountain biker, and I thought the downhills were too steep for newbies. Several newbies crashed and DNFed because of this. No pre-race meeting, so racers were confused on directions. Even the pros were confused. The website didn't have much info before the race, and I had to e-mail to get info like where packet pick-up was. But they did respond to e-mail quickly. Overall the bike was a bit too short to travel such a long ways. But I got my series points, which was the goal.

  • Comments: "Xterra is an extreme event......I just don't want to see you get discouraged..... maybe try a local sprint race and THEN attempt an Xterra....." All very, very sound advice as it turns out. This was too much. I am thrilled that I finished despite the fact that my time was unimpressive. I was badly fooled by the distances. 1000m swim, 11mi ride, 4mi run? In training, I can do that without breaking a sweat at this point, and did! in less than 1:50..... on flat land, at sea level, with no crowd. Ridiculous grades, 7,000 ft. plus elevation, trails whose surfaces resemble moonscapes....... .....Xterra, damn uncivilized.... .... but it was my first tri and I loved every minute of it.

  • Comments: First tri - it was hard. Way more hills than any other 10K or 1/2 Marathon I've done.
