Mastering Flip Turns: A Primer
At some point in your triathlon career you will need to master the art of the flip turn to continue your swimming progress.
Member Question
Help! I used to be able to do these (back when I took lessons).
After I flip, I push off and end up doing a corkscrew into the bottom of the pool (in the shallow end). I now have a nice scrape on my ribcage.
Answer
I often get asked this question about learning how to do a flip turn. Most triathletes I have coached, especially the beginner-intermediate types, do not know how to do flip turns, and instead do open turns at every wall.
Although there are no walls in the open water, it is still important to learn flip turns for your training. I wouldn’t put it at the top of your list of things to learn in the pool—definitely work on technique first—but at some point in your triathlon career you will need to master the art of the flip turn to continue your swimming progress.
