Member Question: First Ironman after Marathon?

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

Member question from regrunred:

Is three months too soon to do an Ironman after doing the Boston marathon? I am considering signing up for Lake Placid Ironman in 2009. I went to LP two weekends ago with a group of friends to volunteer and sign up (actually I was there for the experience and didn't intend on signing up until I got the Ironman bug...). I am running Boston in April and LP is in July.

I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. LP would be my first IM. I am looking for training/coaching advice: Is this is advisable, and if so, what can I do to prepare for both without injuring myself? I have not done a 1/2 IM yet either, but would need to in my training plan I am assuming.

Answer:
