Member Question: Hydration on Hot Days for Sprint Triathlons
In both races (both were around 90 degrees during the run) however, during the run I felt like I had consumed too much fluid on the bike.
Member Question from BrendanOB
I just completed my second triathlon, the Austin Tri (Sprint). In both triathlons I've done, I was worried about under-hydration (both were around 90 degrees during the run). In both races however, during the run I felt like I had consumed too much fluid on the bike. Therefore, I felt a bit "burpy" for most of the run. Can you discuss hydration strategies for sprints? How much to drink, when to drink, what to drink.
Thanks!
Answer
Congrats on finishing your second triathlon! It is not uncommon for a newbie (or veteran) athlete to worry about hydration requirements during a triathlon event, especially during hot temperatures. When preparing for a sprint triathlon, it is likely that you will train once or twice a day, most days of the week, in order to ensure that your body is ready for the combination of swimming, cycling and running.
