Comments: The run was fine. I came in as the 2nd Clydesdale and it was nice to see all the bikes still racked when I came in. What would you do differently?: I really need to realx more. I always start too fast and my HR elevates way too quickly, but it is a 5K so maybe its not that big of a deal. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Since I am not the strongest rider and ride an ancient bike, I knew that my transition times were important as its easy to pick up time here. The speed laces worked like a charm and I was in my bike shoes and running through the bike alley in no time at all. I haven't perfected the run barefoot with my shoes already clipped in method but I seemed to be ok. What would you do differently?: Not much. Under 1 minute is pretty good. ![]() Bike
Comments: Admittedly, I am not a strong rider. Last year when i got into multisport racing, I purchased a old 1990 Cannondale ( yes, the gears are on the downtube). I added clippless pedal andaerobars this year and its definately made a difference. I am faster but the bike is too small. I have a fitting soon and am hoping a real tri bike w/ race wheels will help me even more. But, it still comes down to the carpenter and not his tools. Philadelphia is too flat. I really need to get out of my comfort zone and ride hills. So, I felt like a pro racer averaging about 25 plus on the way out but it was wind aided and I paid for on the way back where I was reduced to below 15 at times. The last part was a climb back up the bridge. My butt was killing me and my calves were sore. I decided to employ the Alberto Salazar theory to the hill ( Thanks Raymond). I took it easy and counted the people as they passed me on the way up. 9 in all. Once I hit the top, I hammered it and let gravity and my 200 lb body do its work by passing 11 on the way down. I hit 42 mph, passed a car and got words of encouragement as I zoomed down the hill. That made all the wind worth it. What would you do differently?: Practice, practice practice ...more hills ...more volume I was 2nd clydesdale after the run and dropped to 6th after the bike. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Another good transition. About a 1/4 mile out, I popped out of my shoes and was riding on top of them while spinning a high cadence. I jumped off the bike and right into a run only feet before the dismount line. Speed laces tightened, helmet off and on my way. I dropped 1 og my fuel belt bottles on the run out but didn't stop to pick it up. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Run
Comments: By now, it was pretty hot and I was sweating a great deal. I could have pushed myslef harder and know I capable of more than an 8:01 pace but its the 1st race of the season and I was really just looking to finish and relax. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Changed clothes, packed up transition, packed up car, light jog. Checked out the results, hung out with Joe for a bit and went home for a swim in the School Kill. Joe took 2nd in his age group and Heather was 2nd overall female. Good job T3. What limited your ability to perform faster: My bike leg Event comments: Piranha Sports and Lin Mark put on a good race. When there is all you can eat pizza, its hard to complain. Last updated: 2005-04-20 12:00 AM

Pre race meal - chicken and rice with a cold Amstel.
Sleep - 6.5 hours
Woke up @ 4:30
Breakfast was coffee, bowl of raisin bran, Egg McCarroll sandwhich and a banana smoothie.
Left @ 5am
Arrived @ 6:00am and went directly to packet pick up. Since it was early, there was no lines and I had my bike inspected a day earlier so I got right into the transition area and got set up.
It was really cold and chilly (low 40s) before the sun came up. I refuse to ride in tights and my leg warmers don't stay up when I run, so I was praying for it to warm up and it did.
After I was set up, I walked around and drooled over all the neat bikes, like a kid in a toy store. I also stopped by to see temmates Joe and Jason to wish them luck. I went out for a light jog and saw Heather on her way out as I came in.
The "Isn't that special" moment of the day cmae when the mc announced that defending champ Greg Watson and the 2nd place female Cecily " fake boobs" Tynan would not be competing b/c they were off getting married.
The "I don't care who you are" award goes to me for my confrontation with a racer who moved a few bikes, including mine in the rack so he could get his in the desired spot. It turned out that the guy was Pro Male Spencer Smith who was the overall winner. Show up earlier next time buddy.
At T-15 minutes, I ate a carb boom, popped tylenon 8 hour and 3 endrolytes.
