cross training...indoor rowing

Just thought I would throw it out and see what info comes back.

I am thinking of doing indoor rowing to cross train for Ironman...there is an indoor "regatta" @ St George's school, that allows recreational masters to participate...but I am brand new to the idea and want to gather info...
Anyone have any input?

I would like to row(single) in the future...live close to Bby Lake, which will work, but I don't wanna learn in winter because I am sure I will do a bit of swimming out of the boat initially.

Any comments, suggestions, links etc for Greater Vancouver area would be great
