Age Group Rank = 22/22
Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 5:30 & I actually hit the snooze button. Must be a reflex. Got my bagel & peanut butter together, got my husband up (who thoughtfully slept in the living room on the sofa bed) and was out the door by 6. Unfortunately we needed gas and the gas station near us is sadly slow, didn't really get on the road until 6:20. Lloyd dropped me off at the park and I found out they were running late. Got marked, had a brief "holy s--t, what am I doing here" moment, but I settled down. Race didn't start until near 8.
Event warmup:

Basic stretches. No warm-up in the pool, which is a left-over taboo from my racing days. Paced...which has to count for some kind of warm-up

Comments:

No real timer for the swim. Just a (very nice) woman who noted the time when we got out of the pool. I think I lost a little time because she didn't notice me right away when I got out. I thought maybe I had miscounted, but she said I was done. First one out of the pool in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

I initially thought I would like to have been reseeded, but in retrospect, I kinda liked being way ahead in my lane without fighting for space.

Comments:

Since there was no breakdown of time between exiting the pool & getting on my bike out of the pool area, I have no sense of how long it took. Seemed like getting my shorts on took a little more time than it should have. The interior compression short was getting snagged on my wet skin. Everything else went quickly.
What would you do differently?:

I felt like everything was where I needed to be. My bike was racked at the end - so there was no ducking around anyone else's stuff to get to it. Don' think I'd do anything differently.
Bike

Comments:

Started losing time here. Just couldn't get my legs to work on the first hill, which was one hell of a hill. Smoothed out after that and felt reasonably well, until I got stuck with the gaggle of girls & couldn't shake them. What made it even more annoying is that they weren't even racing.
What would you do differently?:

More riding on the roads, instead of relying on the stationary bike at the gym. I knew it was a mistake, but couldn't avoid it much.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Fought with the bike a bit getting it racked. Got the helmet and hat switched pretty quickly and was off. Still, it felt like a fast turn around.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really that I can think of.

Comments:

Yeah, this was bad. Had nothing left in my legs. Nearly tripped right at the start, but kept running until I was out of sight of my parents. Walked the hill and was passed by a bunch of people. I ran maybe a mile and a half total of the whole course. Was REALLY dizzy near the end. And to add insult to injury...there were STAIRS at the end of the course. TWO SETS!!!! That's just mean.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder for the run. Do more hot weather bike to run sessions.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked the pool deck a little. Got some food. Stretched some. Gathered my stuff & walked with my parents back to their car so they could drive me down to my husband's car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The lead weights my legs turned into. Need more training.

Event comments:

No post race activities. One boro commissioner was there giving a brief and dull speech before the awards were given out & that was it. No music, not even piped in. A little bit of food. Actually, considering I was one of the last people to finish I have to say that I'm impressed that there was a lot of food left over when I got there. Bagels, orange wedges, sports drink, water & bananas. Free massages, but it was so bloody hot, I didn't want anyone near me.

Course: Hilly at first, then flattened out for a while, then some slight hills again near the MET. Got more and more crowded as the day wore on since it wasn't a closed course. Got stuck in the middle of a pack of annoying girls that were complaining about their love lives for a little while. Umm...excuse me, I trying to keep my head in the race. I really don't care to hear that you're last boyfriend was an a$$ but was good at oral. Y'know, I don't think I ever need to hear that, as a matter of fact. Was so touched by a few of my friends who showed up on the course. 9am on a Sunday when they live in Jersey City, NJ & Brooklyn - that's friendship. It made me teary & smiley at the same time.
