![]() Run
Comments: Ran the first mile in ~8:40, I don't remember the split for the second mile, but know I completed the segment around 18:30-19min. Course was not too difficult but did have a short uphill climb at end of second mile. I made my goal of completing the first run portion in less than 20 min, but I was winded. Bike time was affected by this. What would you do differently?: Run with smaller, quicker steps. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Took cup of Powerade and walked to my bike because I was tired. Set up of T1 was good. Had no problem with getting gear and unraking bike, but was slow due to tiredness What would you do differently?: Not take cup of Powerade, but water. Run to bike ![]() Bike
Comments: It was hard going on way out. Had an unperceivable incline that kept me at about 11-13mph. Miles were going so slow that around mile 3 I hit a mental block and pace slowed and I felt miserable. At turn around the downward incline helped boost my speed and the ride in was fun with an average of 19-20mph. My goal was to complete the bike in 45 min or less, which did not happen. What would you do differently?: Relax and enjoy ride even when going slower than desired. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Didn't have so much trouble racking bike as in the triathlon. What would you do differently?: nothing ![]() Run
Comments: Found myself using long gait, which is slow and wastes energy. One girl that passed me noted that I was going so slow it made the run hard, which is true. I did enjoy cheering for people as they passed headed in to the finish as I ran out. On way in I was too tired to do much cheering. What would you do differently?: Shorten steps to reduce wasted energy and quicken pace. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walk around, drink cool water they handed out and eat a half a banana. Waited about a half hour (and ate my hogie) until results were finalized and awards handed out. The sandwich tasted really good (buying that was a great idea). Finally I stretched for about 30 min around 11:30am (about an hour after I finished the race - I was too tired to do it before then). What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental toughness for bike and endurance for the run, and the fact that I have a 175lbs to pack along. I also ran hard on Monday from which I was still recuperating, and endurance may have been hindered by this. Event comments: Overall, this was a fun race. I ran faster than 1hr 30min so I am happy with my time. There are some areas that I need to work on, which gives me motivation to continue training. Last updated: 2005-05-20 12:00 AM

Up at 7am. Ate a slice of flax seed bread and a large bagel. Went to Safeway to pick up a hogie sandwich for after the race. Arrived at Hell's Gate Park around 7:40am, checked-in and set up T1 (I was early enough to get a spot near the exit). Once set up I relaxed until 8am when I ate my first PowerGel packet. I then covered myself in suntan lotion and then walked around the park. I ran a warm up at 8:15 and stretched. Ate my second packet of PowerGel. Also put one into my waterbottle for the bike. Stretched some more until the pre-race meeting and the start of the race at 9am.
Walked around the park for about 5-10min. At about 8:15 I began a slow run for about 5min. My legs felt really sluggish. After the warm-up I stretched for about 10-15min. Then just kept loose and relaxed until the race began.
