Pre-race routine:

Ate a banana, coffee, juice - got to race, set up bike and gear - went and got marked, and then walked around, talked to a couple contestants - watched the oly group go, then got wetsuit on - went into water, warm up 20 strokes or so out and back.
Swim
  • 10m 48s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Amazed that came out of the water 27th, as swim was horrible - started out with to racers in front of me, going too slow even though I was at the front of the pack at the start. Tried to get by them with a hard push, then felt my breath going as I went out too hard, and then took some water in - not used to the suit and between that and the cold, never got a rythm and ended up doing breast stroke for the last 300meters - amazing that my time was a low as it was considering how bad it felt... got out of the water completely out of breath, walked through sand to transition
What would you do differently?:

Move out of centre slightly, try to find a little more open water, and get into my normal rythm right from the outset - and definitely relax more - overall, way too panicky from the jostling in the pack... elbows and legs everywhere...
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Not bad.. forgot to put my number on when I started to run with bike, had to stop and go back about 4 or 5 paces... otherwise, pretty good - a little hitch on my ankle with the timing chip.. in other respects, other than completely exhausted after a horrible swim - the transition was ok.
Bike
  • 46m 13s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.96 km/hr
Comments:

Bike went quite well actually, till the transition - got into a good rythm, passed a few riders, only got passed by a few others... really felt relaxed, enjoyed the course - could have pushed a little harder on the hill, but overall, easily my best part of the race. Til the end. In the entry to the transition, tried to get too fancy, pulled my right foot off, swung around while slowing down, tried to jump off running, and tripped, wiping out with the bike..skinning my leg, hand, arm - good news is somehow I continued run to transition and quickly got onto the road
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, except, slow down and make sure I'm in control in the transition obviously, maybe get a better shot of gatorade or goo before starting the run?
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

See above - totally messed up on entry to transition, leaving me laid out with road burn after mis-stepping in jumping off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

See above
Run
  • 43m 49s
  • 5 kms
  • 08m 46s  min/km
Comments:

No legs at all... ran for 8 minutes, then started run-walk intervals - 1 min on, 1 off - till close to turn around, started to pick pace up - then screwed up again, and ran maybe 500m too far...til I stopped, sensing that I missed it, and asked another runner (in the oly event) if I missed my turn - which I did... stupid, stupid, stupid... after that, seeking my girl friend catch me totally deflated me, and the bounce I felt I was getting completely left me, and it was just a matter of getting done...
What would you do differently?:

Pre-ride the course, see where turn around is for sure - train on run better, knew that was going to be a problem, with injuries in the month leading to race.. and maybe just push myself a little harder - when I got to the finish, I totally felt like I could have run another k or two...
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, at some food, drank alot of gatorade - did the hot-tub, and sat next to Carol Montgomery (which was totally cool!).. did about a 2k jog about a half hour later to loosen up legs

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, weight, wiping out my bike int he transition.. mentally I felt a little beaten with all the people passing me in the run.

Event comments:

The marking of the turn around could have been much better - not that I blame anyone for me being an idiot and not checking it out ahead of time -but apparently I wasn't the only one who did what I did - there was a little two or three foot high sign and a lot of people in the area of the turn around and without anyone in front of me, I totally missed it - other than that, very minor complaint - very excellent race! Will definitely be back next year!
