Pre-race routine:

Since I started a new job this week, I have not done much of anything. Well, got up around 6:00 am, had gone to bed late, and only got about six hours of sleep. Got up, jumped in the car, and I-75 was not closed at I-696 for once!
Event warmup:

Jogged around a bit with some ladies. Did my version of stretching.
Run
  • 39m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Went to the start of the group, since I know this would be the only time I am in the front. Saw another dude in a Team Javelin jersey and said hi, no idea who he was, but when we started he made me look like I was standing still. Well the first mile of the 5k (3.1 miles) was good, then, then, my left knee started to act up, bad. I was getting shooting pain in the left knee. It kept getting worse, so I ended up walking the rest of the first run. When I got back to the transition area, I had had enough and dropped out. I did not want to hurt my knee any more then I already had. This was the same pain I somehow inflicted on myself at Autumn Colors, two weeks ago, but I thought it would be fine by now, I guess not. When I was getting a massage after Sunday's cyclocross race the therapist said that my legs are full of knots. Saying that it might be the IT band that is doing it being so stiff.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how stretching is REALLY done. I saw a number of folks doing all kinds of different stretches.

Add a massage therapist to my personal race staff and entourage (note I am just joking about the entourage).

Warm down:

I had thought about going to see my PCP about the knee, but decided against it. I DID go and buy two new pairs of proper running shoes at Total Runner in Southgate, MI. One for running, and a second pair that was on sale and gray for work and every day use to replace my $25 Kmart shoes, I am sure the Kmart shoes did not help the knee.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Knee pain.

Event comments:

3D Racing still does put on great races, even when I DNFd. The head lady did even wish me well when I gave her my chip.
