Pre-race routine:

normal pre race routine except for extra time to strap gels to my bike (6 in all)

Woke up at 4.30, had a coffee and raisin toast with peanut butter and honey and had a banana. Drank some water. Checked gear and put everything in the car.

Also drunk sport drinks on way to event.

Got to event bike was already racked on previous day. Set up gear and double checked everything.

Felt pretty nervous when first got up as my first long course race.
Event warmup:

Long course so not much warm up but did a swim out and back from start just to get arms moving and blood flowing.

Comments:

What and amazing swim. Fastest I have swam that distance. Just love it. Could of carried on. at the turnaround about 1km out you could still see the bottom. there was little chop. I could improve on my drafting as i found myself often swimming alone. Navigation was used off other people as i could see them as the water was so crystal clear.
What would you do differently?:

Draft better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Came out of water and had about 1min run up some steps. This was the first time I have finished a swim and been able to bound up the steps and out of the water and feel really fresh rather than gasping for breath.

Need to get some triathlon shoes so can run off with bike and put them in while riding. Using road shoes with awkward strap which you have to lever.
What would you do differently?:

New shoes.
Bike
  • 2h 35m 25s
  • 83 kms
  • 32.04 km/hr
Comments:

Bike was good and was happy with my performance. Stuggled a little as it was undulating course (basically just need to loose a spot more weight.) felt some twinges of leg cramp on the 2nd lap but they disappeared. There was a lot of drafting for a non drafting event and didnt like the large groups come flying past all on each others tail.

Also there was 12m non draft zone between cyclist. This often would see someone overtake and push into the gap and then slow down.
What would you do differently?:

Loose some weight for next year so can improve on bike time
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Just wanted to make sure i had all my nutrition for the run. (Gels and salt tabs). So took a bit of extra time with that. Shoes went on without a problem using body glide.
What would you do differently?:

Run with shoes still on the bike.
Run
  • 1h 51m 43s
  • 20 kms
  • 05m 35s  min/km
Comments:

Came of the bike and felt really good on the run for the first couple of k and then the cramps set in. Had numerous salt tabs on the run, but think i could have been overhydrating. Also later on ahd a stitch but maanged to work it off. Took 6 gels out with me and only had 4 in the end.
What would you do differently?:

Work out nutrition to not get cramps
Post race
Warm down:

Complimentary massage by some local uni strudents. Rehydrated with water and had fruit salad and ice cream.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramps on the run and weight at this stage

Event comments:

Well organised well run event. Only negative commment would be the water bottles on the bike aid station were so hard you couldnt squeeze them into the aero bottle. Next year continue to loose weight and go for a 4.45
