Subject: Midway Atoll

Hello everyone, It's been quite some time since I've posted on a BT thread.  I've been working in a clinic on Midway Island in the middle of the North Pacific so keeping up on tri stuff and training properly has been a bit problematic.  Especially considering 95% of the roads are gravel.  The only proper asphalt for riding is the runways, and they frown on training on those.

The main reason I am writing today is to spread the word about some of the problems the wildlife here are facing.  This is an extraordinarily beautiful place that happens to be home to almost a million Albatross during mating and fledgling seasons, not to mention numerous terns, petrels, tropical birds, monk seals, turtles, etc.

Tens of thousands of Albatross die every season and 100% of the necropsies done show large amounts of plastic in their bellies causing them to starve to death or suffocate.  There is a film crew on the island right now that is trying to raise money to distribute their film to help spread the word on this issue.  Below is a link to their website where you can view the trailer to their film.  Maybe its because I am living with these birds everyday and getting to really appreciate them and their personalities but the film really made me think about the amount of trash that we dispose of on a daily basis.  It's sad but there is actually a NOAA crew whose sole job is to clean up marine debris, but they can't do much for the small bits of plastic, bottle caps, lighters, etc that are all over the oceans.  If you feel compelled after viewing the video, there is a link to their Kickstarter page where you can donate to help them distribute the film.  They are willing and offering to give the film, free of charge, to any educational organization once it is complete in order to improve this issue.

I appreciate you reading this and thanks for your time.
