HITS Triathlon Series
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 24m 14s
Overall Rank = 10/162
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:50 because it takes over a hour to get there and didn't want to miss the 6 am deadline to check-in. Had a bagel with light butter and a banana. A GU gel about 20 minutes before the start.
Event warmup:

After getting my transition area set, walked around and did some stretching.
Swim
  • 11m 59s
  • 750 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was crystal clear, don't see that very often. Went out strong but backed off because I wanted to save some energy for a hilly bike course. Caught up to someone that seemed to be at a good pace and drafted with them. Felt great coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Should have gone a little faster, held back too much for a sprint.
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

Starting to get the hang of these transitions. Still could have done better.
What would you do differently?:

Work on cleaning feet and getting on socks faster.
Bike
  • 44m 23s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great ride. I didn't want to cook my legs on the hill but found myself being able to maintain a real good cadence and started passing folks. Felt real strong the whole way. Still learning how to handle downhill descents and was passed by one person on a tri bike in aero position.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working the hills and get more comfortable coming down hills. Might invest in some aero bars for the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Again getting better with the transitions. Getting shoes on was smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing.
Run
  • 24m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt OK off the bike. Took it easy for the first half mile until I got my legs under me. Just wanted to maintain my pace and have a good finish.
What would you do differently?:

I need to keep doing bricks with hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and had some fruit. Walked around with my wife to look at the vendors. Waited to see how I placed and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have gone a little faster on the swim. I don't think it would have affected my bike.

Event comments:

For the limited number of races I have done (3), I thought HITS put on a great event. It was well organized, the volunteers were helpful and cheerful. Mark Wilson (RD) was great and was walking around interacting with the athletes. The announcer made you feel like a rock star. I really like the "a distance for everyone." My wife who does not race, really liked the event and may "tri" the Open race next year. I also thought the prices were good, especially if you sign up early. I am looking forward to racing with HITS again!

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
