Overall Rank = 244/344
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 30/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30, ate breakfast, and loaded the car. Drove to the race in the rain. Set up transition in the pouring rain. Hid in my car to get out of the rain. Found out my Heat Rate Strap was acting up so I decided to just do the race on RPE. It stopped raining about 30 min before the race start and stayed that way for most of the race.
Swim
  • 11m 7s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was down stream in a river. There was very little current this year so it was a lot like swimming in a lake. The start was a time trial start where you entered the river on a large inflatable water slide. The slide was fun but it took awhile to get everyone in the river. Once splashing in I had a pretty good swim. Good breathing, good navigation, good swim. After getting out there is quite a long run up a pretty steep hill to get to transition, so that skewed the time a little.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Transition was smooth. Everything was soaking wet from the rain but that did not pose any problems.
Bike
  • 44m 21s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I started off on the bike a little fast. Started to get a side stitch and had to take it easy for a mile or so to get that under control. Once I got in my rhythm things went very well. Around mile 10 a guy passed me then proceeded to take a corner too fast on the wet roads and wiped out right in from of me. I was able to miss him by riding through the grass and he said he was ok. Pretty scary (probably more for him than me.)
What would you do differently?:

Take it a little easier at the start.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Smooth Transition.
Run
  • 35m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 02s  min/km
Comments:

The run went fairly well. Running is my weakest sport so anytime I run the distance I'm happy. I think I could have run a little faster as I still had a good bit of energy left towards the end. I did use that to pick up the pace but probably could have been faster by increasing my pace a little the entire run.
What would you do differently?:

Run Faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some snacks, watched others finish. Headed home to get dry.

Great job on the race! Sounds like it is a laid back fun race! Gotta love an inflatable water slide start! Plus in a river with the current(even though there was barely any!!)

In addition to writing your race number on each upper arm, they also wrote your age on your calf. This allowed me to see who was passing me by in the bike section of this race.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
