Spotsylvania, Virginia

Set Up Events
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 14m 31s
Overall Rank = 537/570
Age Group = NM
Age Group Rank = 38/40
Pre-race routine:

Got there early to get chip and body marking. Plenty of time to rack bike and set up. Went around to find transition in/out.
Event warmup:

general stretching.......in water to loosen up a bit
Swim
  • 25m 15s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

First time with a wet suit and first time open water swim in ~ 20 years. Held back to let the crowd go and then followed .....started out way to fast as it was hard to gauge effort with WS. Turns out WS was a bit too small and constricted breathing
What would you do differently?:

Correct fitting WS, or go with no WS as the water temp was cold but not that cold. Stick to my pace and realize if I am going to fast

Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

mount line was on a hill and had to run up to the mount line. Long way from rack to time mat.......lot of traffic
What would you do differently?:

overall fairly happy with my transition, traffic and choke points killed me
Bike
  • 1h 05m
  • 15.5 miles
  • 14.31 mile/hr
Comments:

New bike for this year and first race with it.....love it!!! Was able to drop the hammer on flats and downhills confidence. Actually this was one of my best times compared with training rides.
What would you do differently?:

Would ride the course in a car of my bike if possible to mark hills and areas to gain time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Happy with time as I switched shoes and had to put on my patella band. Grabbed a water bottle on the way out
What would you do differently?:

get rid of water bottle
Run
  • 37m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Really crappy time on run, hill really kicked my butt!
What would you do differently?:

Didn't train for run as much as I should have
Post race
Warm down:

water and walking to cool off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Got behind the power curve with the swim, but made up with the ride. Totally sucked on the run. Training for this race was spotty at best due to work and weather. Overall a good base line for me to start the season.

Event comments:

Great race for my first sprint. Will be back as the race was super fun and well organized. Volunteers were great, giving encouragement even later in the race. Although not a big fan of hills, I'll always have a spot on my calender for this race.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
