Comments:

Saw the previous winner at the start line, so decided to pace myself off him. He ran mid-16 last time, so if I could stay close that would be a pretty good result for me. We started off shoulder to shoulder, and he mentioned he wasn't in top form, but still was hoping to run around 16:30. We hit the first two KM splits at 3:25 each (3:24 being 17 flat). It was hard, but manageable. I stayed with him through 4k (missed the splits at 3 and 4), and had a decision to make. I felt like at any moment I was going to fall off the pace, but with his high end speed I did not think I could win a sprint finish, so it was now or never to make a move. I put in what I could to separate, and he didn't seem to respond. Now I just had to hold on, because getting passed after making a move would be embarrassing haha. I pushed as hard as I could, which there wasn't much for a true kick and to get me under 17, but I crossed in first place and with a new 5k PR!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, awesome awesome result, especially considering I fit this in during Ironman training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with Amelia, attended awards, and the beginning of the raffle. Eventually left for my 12 mile run home to get 2 hours on the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being fully tapered I suppose, but can't complain about a PR!

Event comments:

Great cause that means a lot to me personally. Two years to the day for me this time around.
