Subject: Ladies - Specialized Trivents - How Do They Fit You?

So I got a $200 gift card to my LBS and REALLY want to get tri-shoes. The only ones they carry are the Specialized Tri-Vents. I have a pair of Specialized Torch road shoes, in size 37, which is a size 7 in US sizes. I am normally a size 6 street shoe. I tried on the Tri-Vents in size 36 (6) and 27 (7). They do not come in a 6.5. The 36 feels very perfect all the way around my feet, but are hard to get into quickly. I feel also if my feet got hot and sweaty that they might be a teeny bit snug. The 37 feels a bit less snug, but much easier to get into, as I feel they should be. I was told they will not stretch; but I'm also not going to be wearing socks with them. I have always worn my size 37 Torch road shoes without socks for tris and they've always been fine. Only thing with the Tri-Vents is that there is a little bit more room in the toe in the 37 than the 36. There aren't a lot of tri-shoes for women out there, and my feet are small, so a men's shoe is not an option. I can always order tri-shoes from another brand online and see if they fit, but that's such a hassle.

For those of you with tri-shoes, how do yours fit? If you have the Tri-Vents, how do they fit you? Thanks!

I have the trivents and love them. Mine are an 8; I typically wear a size 8.5. I think I heard once to err on the side of larger than too small with cycling shoes, but not sure. Mine definitely have some wiggle room as my feet fit comfortably in them both barefoot and with thick enough socks to get me through rides in sub-freezing temps. There is a lot of extra room at the toe, but the room seems to come in height.

Can you sort of walk around in them fine (I know it's hard to walk in riding shoes). I definitely have some wiggle room and can move my feet around, but they pretty much stay in place when I'm riding. Not sure what to say...you want to be comfortable. You also don't want a shoe that will constantly have you wondering if it fits properly.

Did the shop comment about the fit?

Although I don't own the Trivents...I tried them on at my LBS. I tried both a 42 (ya, I know...BOZO feet here!) and a 41. I normally wear a size 10 street shoe, 10 1/2 running shoe. I thought the 42's were comfortable, but perhaps a tad too roomy. The 41's felt snugger, but not overly so. I do wish they came in half sizes, because I think a 41.5 would be dead-on perfect. I will probably end up getting a pair next season, because I liked them that much...but couldn't justify spending the money on them for my first tri season. Probably doesn't help you much, but thought I'd throw that out there.

How easily does your foot go into them?

Pretty easily. I don't do a flying mount or anything, but getting my feet into the shoes had never been something I've had to give a second thought to. They just slide right in.

Ah, okay. The size 36s do not slide right in. The 37s do. They don't make them in half sizes until 7.5, arg. Looks like I'm gonna continue shopping around...grrrr....they are SUPER-cute and match my bike Plus, they'd be free...

If its okay for a Male to chime in here

I have the men's tri-vents and love them. I have reco'd these to everyone I know looking for shoes. Three of them women (one ..my wife). They all love them. I had a hard time finding a pair of bike shoes that seemed to "fit" right..and I have pretty typical feet. The Specialized brand..and the tri-vents in particular were the first ones that really felt right to me. I have had them for two years and never had a complaint. Never a blister..nothing (and I ride barefoot..all the time).

From your description..I think I would probably go with the 36 if they felt fine on your feet. If you walk around ..do they start to feel "hot" at all. That would indicate too tight/friction. If not..I dont think that I would worry about how easily your feet can slide in. (a) they will loosen up a bit, (b) you can always put some body glide on your feet or powder your shoes (I would opt for body glide first...but your preference). Also..make sure the straps are really opened up..I sometimes have trouble if I am a bit lazy and dont open them the whole way.

Try some other shoes just to be sure...but overall...just a great shoe.

Just curious...for those of you that use tri shoes...do any of you wear them as your everyday cycling shoe too? Or do you just use them for triathlons?

I wear my tri-vents all the time. I would imagine most triathletes don't have two sets of shoes ...racing/training. Wear what you race in, unless you absolutely NEED something else (for example, on my run, I would wear race flats only for a race...but generally train in trainers. For biking, no need to wear something different).

Well, it was $200 of FREE cash to my LBS, plus the fact that every time I ratchet those dang things in transition, I think "I could shave off several seconds here by not having to fasten all these straps". I got my road shoes last year when I bought my bike and didn't even know that special triathlon shoes existed.
