Soo it's been over a year since I've touched this site. I used to be obsessed with it!! But from figuring out my life in my last year of college to moving here from Michigan, it has all been so crazy. Now I'm settling into this absolutely crazy city and starting to wonder where people like to run around here... I live close to Runyon Canyon and I really love that place in the early mornings when it's not too crowded. But for regular runs I guess I'm just overwhelmed...I guess I'll just put one foot in front of the other and figure it out!

Other than that I left my 1985 road bike in Michigan because it weighed 32490234 lbs and now that I have a career I'll be able to get a legit one someday. And swimming, ha. It's been a while. But I miss tris. And you can train all year out here which will be crazy...I'm used to constant ice and snow Nov-April. I've done a good number of sprints and one olympic and was in tri club during college and I want to start up again!

Speaking of LA...ok does anyone know anything about the gyms here? I went on Yelp and it seems that 24hr fitness is cheap but that the ones in the hollywood area are kinda nasty. Any recommendations would help. Actually any recommendations about anything in this city could help!!

Thanks in advance.

I live in Hollywood and had 24hr and now Bally's.  Both are ridiculously crowded.  Forget swimming there.  About all you can count on is a treadmill and even then you gotta wait in line.  Plus they have me on a 3 yr contract.

If I had it over to again I would just stay away from both.  The LA cty pool system is great, they have good hours and it's cheap.  I freq Glasell Park mostly

http://www.laparks.org/dos/aquatic/yr_round.htm (year round pools, usually free up to $2 max)

Plenty of places to run around here.  If you want urban...well that ones easy.  If you want dirt trails nearby theres Griffith Park which can vary from flat to trail runs that are very hilly.  Plenty of high school tracks in the area, LA Tri Club meets at a few up this way.  Then theres the beach for long runs on the weekend.  It's really wide open.  Biking can be challenging for the fainst of heart.  Safe places are again Griffith Park and if you want a peleton theres the rose bowl on Tues and Thurs nights.

Too bad you're not closer to the Westside

I've heard good things about the YMCAs in your area that have pools, as far as gym goes, and their facilities and class offerings are decent, if you are into that.

They are slightly more expensive in the long run, but I'm an LA Fitness member and I love the one I go to (18th and La Cienega).  However, there's a very new one that just opened like a year ago right near Hollywood/Highland.  The weights and equipment there are really new and nice.  I've worked out there a couple of times.  Never checked out the pool though, although someone told me they have an outdoor one, which would be cool to swim in when the weather is nice.

Check out the LA Tri Club (latriclub.com) for lots of options for group workouts and open water swims. My prefered Gym is LA Fitness, although I haven't gone to the one in your neighborhood. I also go to the one on La Cienaga and 18th. Pool sucks, and is usally crowded, but will do in a pinch. Plenty of treadmills and the spin classes can be ok depending on the instructor. If you want a masters swim team check out SCAQ (www.swim.net/scaq) which has masters teams all over LA. The most popular pools in the area (where all the fast swimmers are) are the Culver City Plunge and the Santa Monica Swim Center. For group rides you can join the LA Tri CLub, La Grange (lagrange.org) or the LA Wheelmen (lawheelmen.org).

definitely check out your local public pool, lap swimming is only $2 with your library card, $2.50 without it.  it actually used to be free!  besides that, you may also want to take your bike down to the beach for long rides.  the beach path goes from Pacific Palisades all the way down to Torrance.  I believe it is about 40 miles round trip if you ride the whole path.  plenty of good hills at the end of the bike path in the PV area as well.  as for running, it rains here so infrequently and the weather is almost always warm enough to go out for a jog.  i used to have a gym membership, but stopped using it because i enjoy training outdoors so much more than indoors.

I was told it was going back to free after the summer programs end.  I doubt it though...once they raise prices why bring em down?  Good while it lasted I guess.  $2 is still super cheap...compared to $10 per day at the rose bowl and it's still packed out 3-5 to a lane.

Now I remember why I like this site-- people actually read and reply!

Thanks so much for your help. I do love going to the beach path on the weekends when I have time. But running around here you always see something interesting...when I was running at 630am up La Brea to Runyon on a Saturday morning, a hooker got picked up right after I ran past her-- that's when I knew I'm not in Michigan anymore...

Looking forward to training outside and am still thinking about a gym...I heard LA fitness has crazy rates and I wonder if I should just save that money for my new bike instead. Definitely will check out the local pools though to see what's up, though I will for sure be the slowest one there!!

Is anyone here in a trail running club? I read about one who do runs in the santa monica mtns on Sundays and was thinking of checking it out. It's amazing how different the air is up there.

Sidebar-- are many of the tris here ocean swims? I assume so...this is scary to me since swimming is my downfall... is the LA tri club good even for semi-newbies who have only done a few tris? I feel like everyone in it on the website looks like they're fitness models haha. I could really use some help swimming in general though, I have breathing difficulties to this day, notably in colder water.

Two things I miss about living in LA ... The Reel Inn on PCH and running in Temescal Canyon.

all of the tris i've done have been in CA and have been in salt water.  some have been in harbors or back bays, but many are also in the ocean.  as for the LA tri club, i'm not a member, but i have gone out on their weekly swims in santa monica.  its a real diverse group, from beginners to what seems to me to be professionals, i have no doubt you'd fit in.  i think on wednesdays, they also have an ocean 101 swim that coincides with their speed circuit.  i'm sure its very helpful for those who are having trouble getting comfortable swimming in the ocean.   since the season is winding down though, i'm not sure how much longer it will be happening.
