Anyone who is planning on doing the Cinco Ranch Tri this weekend, are you bringing a wetsuit? I'm debating it now since it is only 400m, but the forecast looks like the air temp will be around 55. Not sure about the water, but I'm thinking it will be pretty cold. What does everyone else think?

I've been crossing my fingers for good conditions. I've never swam with a wetsuit before and don't even know where to rent one.

I sure hopes it's warmer than 55! I wasn't getting nervous about it until now!Wink

I think the water temp should be fine.

I wish the race didn't fill up before I could get in.

The water temps should be fine.  It's a short swim so it's not bad, I wouldn't worry with a wetsuit.

Nette,

You've done Cinco before right? It's my 1st OWS, so I'm a little nervous. Also, haven't been able to train the last few weeks b/c of an injury. Can you touch bottom if you need to?

I've heard both yes and no.

Thanks!

If they are having it in the same location as last year, there are areas that are shallow enough to stand up in.  I don't think it's very deep overall, but they do have safety people in the water so if you need a break, put your arm up and they will get you.  My first open water experience was a little shaky as well but when I felt overwhelmed, I would just breast stroke and try to relax again.

Good luck to you.

It's been pretty cool the last few nights. I'm going to bring my wetsuit, and decide about wearing it when I get there and have a chance to put my toe in the water.

I swam in Twin Lakes on Wednesday, and the water felt great.  I know it's been colder the last couple of days, but I'm not sure it's been enough to cool down the water temp that much.  Since I haven't practiced with a wet suit, I'll probably blow it off.  If the water temp is below 78, then you can wear a wet suit with no penalty.  If its between 78 an 84, you can wear one, but not get prizes. If it's over 84, which I doubt, you can't use a wet suit.  Since this is my first OWA, I'm not worried about placing, but as I said, I haven't practiced in one, nor do I have one, so it looks like I'll be swimming without one.  The water will probably be warming than the air temp!  I think I'm going to wear some cheap sweats that I can take off right before going in the water, just so I don't have to stand around and freeze my butt off waiting to swim!

Good luck!

Yeah, I was thinking about how cold it would be waiting around in shorts. I think I'll do the cheap sweats too. Hubby won't be there this time to hold them for me. So if I lose them, I lose them. It's better than waiting around in the cold.

It's going to be fun! two more days!

Tri-On-The Run on Memorial has wet suits for rent.  I think I'm going to go ahead a pick one up just in case.  Better to have it and not need it....
