Wow, Tiger shoots a 74 and is 9 shots back of the current leader--Weir is -5. Don't know if he can recover from that, but i wouldn't bet against it.

And Phil's -3 and having a good round! Man, it would be awesome if he could win this thing. Amy said she'd like to have that trophy in her hospital room during her treatments. Wouldn't be a dry eye if he can pull it off.

Being from Chicago I remember back when Olympia Fields had it around 2003 and there had been a ton of rain and the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network (ESPN) made fun of the low scores.

It looks like Bethpage is going to be ripped apart by the pros as well.

Hopefully Phil or Weir win - 2 classy guys.

However there is a TON of golf to be played!

This may offend some people but I saw the interview Mickelson had before his first tournament back and though I do feel for him and his wife, I was kinda put off by his repeated "we's".  "When we start treatment.", etc...   My mom died of breast cancer and I definitely supported her and stood by her as much as I could but I never thought it was "our" battle.   She was the strong one not me.   She had the surgery, the chemo, the radiation.

I do however, commend, his graciousness to the media for their kind words.  I sincerely hopes his wife recovers but maybe Phil could give the credit to his wife!

My 2 cents.

I'm rooting for a Sophomore from Indian University who got in as an alternate when a pro dropped out. David Erdy is a friend of my son's and after the first day is +8. So he's only 4 strokes off Tiger who is next to him in the Locker Room.

Your kidding me right?

This guy is an absolute family man and when he talks about his career and success' he always says we.

He has kids and they are a tight-knit family; yes going through treatment IS a "we" thing.

Kid you not.

Yeah I am pretty sure I know what treatment is!  I went through it with family members 3 times thank you.   When he is gambling does he also say we?   I guess my problem is that I thought he presented himself as being the one with cancer too not just his wife.  Sorry that is not true.  What is true is the heartache his family will go through and I feel for them.  But she is the true champion.

I wish the USGA would ban ESPN's Chris Berman from the U.S. Open.  He comes out of football hibernation and just sounds so stupid covering a golf tournament.  His little rhymes drive me crazy.  (rant off)

That's funny! Yeah, Berman is not a golf guy--I don't get it. For me, the surprise of the day (well other than Tiger) is David Duval out of nowhere.

Did you get to see Trevor Murphy's 3 birdies on 16,17,18 to finish his second round? Here's a great article on Tevor's day: More to Open than Tiger and Phil. Simply awesome!

I was the assistant pro at St. J back in '96 when Trev was a wee lad of 11 or 12. He used to come to the club with his grandpa, BJ, on weekends and some weeknights. Really good kid... Nice to see a small town boy that "done good".

Go get 'em this weekend, lad!!
