To anyone that has done an off road tri before, whats your avg bike speed? I know is very course dependent, but just trying to get a ballpark.

Never done an off road tri, but come from a MTB background, During a race I was around the 12-15 mph, but really depends on the corse, in a MTB race you are climbing or descending not much flat, so that means slow up and a lot of the times slow down depending on how technical the descent is

I've done two Off Road Tri's, both on the same course, approx 13 miles of moderate singletrack. Bike speeds were 10.1 and 10.3. There was quite a bit of rain prior to both events, so there were a few sections where I had to dismount and carry my bike.-Dave

There is a huge difference in speed from course to course. The best way to get a feel for how fast the course will be is to either ride it or take a look at results from previous years.

Riding the course will also give you an idea as to if, or more likely how many, dismount and walk sections you will have as well.

12-15 would give you some really nice bike splits in an xterra, dependent on the course of course.

I have done several off road tris and du's, including the full Richmond Xterra. There is really no avg speed. Speed is course and conditions dependent and both vary wildly. Take a look at some of the bike splits in your local races and use it as a benchmark.

In the Alabama one a few weeks ago Conrad Stoltz biked his leg in right at 17mph - freakin' unreal.  A really fast local did his in 15mph.  Normal good athletes were probably in the 12-13mph range.

The course is a challenging course that isn't hugely technical but has a boog bit of everything (including climbing - north Alabama can be quite hilly).

Conrad is unreal though..  he averaged over 17 in Richmond too, and that course has two stair climbs, 1 spiral stair descent, and has quite a few switchbacks in the middle of the course (but does have a lot of flat sections in between)  He also had the fasted bike split in the 2000 olympic triathlon.
