Subject: Tri Apparel Suggestions

I'm new to the triathlon world and have been training diligently for the past few months in prep for my first sprint tri coming up at the end of August.. super excited. I've been wanting to do this for a couple years but never had the time or that last little bit of motivation to just go for it and the time has finally come.

Anyways, I have a fair amount of training specific gear for riding, running, and of course the swim but I'm looking to purchase some Tri specific apparel and am a little unsure of what to get.. Tri shorts & top or racesuit? I'm not the typical triathlete build and carry more of a muscular frame at 5'-7" 175 lbs. Shopping online, at first glance it appears that 2XU and Zoot have larger marketing budgets than some of the other companies, or maybe the gear is very good.. not sure.  After reading some of the threads in the forum a lot of athletes seem to like De Soto. I'm not really concerned too much about cost, that is unless it's super expensive.  Any suggestions for a first timer?

For bottoms, I'm a huge DeSoto fan and won't use anything else, but it just comes down to what fits you best. If you have a local store, check out whatever they offer. For tops, I'm not very picky - I have Zoot, DeSoto, 2XU, and Sugoi - all work/fit fine. I like 2-pieces for overall convenience, but many folks like 1-pieces for training & short races.  I personally don't see any advantages for me to 1-pieces, so I don't use them, but it's just personal preference.

If possible, go try on as many varieties as you can at a store. If not, find a retailer or manufacturer that has a decent return policy.

Cheers, Chris

Thank you very much for the advice! Every little bit helps and it looks as if everyone that views the post must agree with you.. b/c your the only one to help so far.

Once again thanks and good luck in your next race!

I'm 5'10 and 170 with broader shoulders and small waist due to years of weight lifting.  I really like Louis Garneau and Pearl Izumi.  Most of the time I wear a L top and M bottoms but for the LG stuff I actually have S bottoms...go figure.

REALLY like my De Soto Forza shorts and Carrera top.  In fact I wear my tri shorts on 99% of my bike rides as they are crazy comfy.

I am about the same build, 5'7 1/2" and 165 with a thicker upper body.  The Zoot and 2XU stuff I tried on seemed to all be designed for the thin and skinny (especially upper body).  The De Soto stuff fit me really really well.

Go with a tri suit, I bought one for my first tri on faith and was extremely comfortable.

Any of the popular names will be a decent product - Zoot, LG, Orca, DeSoto, 2XU, etc.  Each brand probably fits a little different though, at least that was my experience.  I tried on 4-5 tri suits and found they had different inseams and other slight differences.  I went with a Zoot, not because of marketing but because of feel.

One bit of advice - I am glad I bought from a local store where I could try it on instead of online even though it costs me a few extra dollars.

I've only done a couple and I consider myself still a beginner. I'm pretty cheap and always looking for a deal. I have the top and bottom from Aevero. Great prices and are great for training and during the race.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone!  I just wish I had store that sold the necessary gear within a reasonable drive... oh well, just might have to saddle up and hit the road soon.

I think the trip to a good shop will be very worthwhile. There's lots of great brands out there, but it all comes down to the best fitting gear for you.  That's tough to experiment with if online shopping is your only option.  Plus, hopefully the bubbas at the shop are well-experienced with solid suggestions, and that can really help too.  Happy hunting!

I wore the DeSoto Forza shorts and a DeSoto tritop for my last race. The shorts were awesome, as comfortable and as good compression as my favorite bike shorts. They dried quickly too. The top was good as well, although since then I have experienced some nipple irritation problems if I wear it for a run; I think the fabric just doesn't agree for me when it gets wet, other than that the top fits awesome.
